95 Points

Saturday, November 30, 2019 - Deeply hued ruby that is bright and clear, with medium optical density and fine, specular reflectivity. Light hint of yellow on the rim. The nose shows very nice intensity and some decent depth, with tobacco- and earth-infused red fruits (cherry, red plum, and reduced strawberry), and just a hint of dark fruit (blueberry and light cassis). Some floral aromatic lifted notes, and just a bit of savory herbal spice flair. Really nice complexity on the nose, with excellent balance. On the palate, medium bodied with medium acidity and medium tannins that provide enough structure, but give an integrated feeling. Shows good concentration and density, and overall, a texture of a fine-grained and well-polished surface, with perhaps profiled edges that provide interest and flair, without any hints of roughness. Flavours on the attack of dried tobacco and warm reduced red fruits (strawberry and cherry) with hints of earth and some seaside iodine and tar in the background. Excellent complexity on entry! The midpalate evolves with herbal spice and floral forest meadow on top of the spiced fruit, providing for a fruit cake profile in a very excellent way. The fruit takes on more complexity and some not-quite candied, but slightly cooked character, which is well offset by earth, tar, and tobacco. Nice depth throughout! The final transition shows some zesty fruit and spice, as things settle in to leave a finish of warm fruit peels and herbal and savoury seaside- like a raw beach-side with a fire-blazed fish and meat barbecue happening. Can also come across as iron, leather, and gravel. Length is medium and overall intensity is very good throughout, with really excellent complexity and depth.

This is truly outstanding wine, and simply nails its for $27CAD. At this price, just wow! 100% Sangiovese, and so well made. Just pure balance of fruit, earthiness, tar, iodine, and other notes, with swirling and thoughtful complexity, and an ethereal quality that just soars. Glad I stocked up on this! Drinking beautifully now, but should just get better and better! Simply awesome!

11/30/2019 6:06:00 PM - A lot of myths & confusion out there about this wine - but I love it. It is often confused with the oft-disrespected Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, which has no relation to the Tuscan town, right?

I read your review at the wine shop today & had to have it. many thanks for your detailed reviews - they really help me appreciate wine more.

Yes, always enjoy that confusing disclarity of Italian wine. And yes, the VNMs can be great, but I find this bottling just fantastic. Glad that describing my enjoyment can add to yours!

12/11/2019 5:59:00 PM - Thanks for the review! I bought one bottle of this vintage and after tasting it, I'm going back for more. I also think it has the structure to age for a while longer so looking forward to seeing what it turns into!

Vino Nobile is typically a great value, but this one especially so.

12/11/2019 6:38:00 PM - Yes, totally agree on value here. It's like a softer, accessible BdM, but still layered a fun. I bought a half case, and will be enjoying over the next couple years!
