1933 Château Margaux

Community Tasting Note

Wednesday, April 13, 2022 - I don't even know how to rate this wine. I drank it at Bern's (where else could you find an old chestnut like this?), where it has been resting since the '50s. It was astonishingly alive and really quite lovely. Delicate fruit remains with a whole panoply of tertiary flavors. Is it a blockbuster? Of course not. But it was made as the Great Depression was ending, and it gave great joy in 2022, which is enough of a triumph for me.

4/14/2022 10:39:00 AM - Great note! But I don't think it's quite right to say that Great Depression was ending in 1933. I suppose it's true that the recovery began that year but it would be years before the depression was over.

Must have been fun to try such an old wine with good life left.
