Tuesday, July 16, 2019 - Napa 2019; 7/14/2019-7/18/2019: Tasted at Ovid. The Pritchard Hill Cab Francs are just so damn good and this is no exception. Red fruit, raspberry, black raspberry, faint black cherry touch of blackberry. Some minor iron and ember notes to round it out. Tannins and some oak still holding this one back, I think within 5 years with a healthy decant, this hit 98-99 with ease. Best wine we tasted at Ovid. Easy buy going forward.

9/22/2019 9:40:00 PM - Thank you for the review. I have not had the opportunity to taste any of their wine (was going to go out there two weeks ago but was unable to fit it in the schedule). Are you familiar with both the estate and Hex wines? Is one better than the other? What are the release prices if you happen to know.

Last question- are these two wines must try in your opinion?

    Thank you for your help!

9/23/2019 4:21:00 PM - I’ve had both wines and both are phenomenal. Release price is $325 but sold in 3 pks. The Cabernet needs 7-10 years (and then some air) to show its stuff. The Hexameter drinks better earlier due to the softer Cabernet Franc components. I like the Hexameter better but then again, I’m a fan of Pritchard Hill Cab Franc blends (Brand has a good one too). I would definitely gives these a try, but you can pick up earlier vintages pre-2013 for under $225 at auction. That’s a better option if you’re not sure whether you will like it. But, get up to Ovid...the views cannot be beat.

9/23/2019 5:34:00 PM - Thanks Geaux! I am a fan of Brand, both the propriety and estate but those are ~$100 cheaper which made me ask the question. Crap now I have to try these as well.

Are the Experiments also a must have or can I just focus on the two big dogs?

Thank you very much for your insight!

9/23/2019 5:46:00 PM - I think the Brand Proprietary is as good or better than the Hexameter. The Brand Prop is a little more luscious and hedonistic, the Hexameter more complex. I would seek out older vintages of Ovid before going all in on new releases. Stick with the big dogs, the Experiments are different every year and you never know on those.
