Tuesday, August 22, 2023 - Slightly unrefined, but not uncouth - a nice, slightly funky Beaujolais that the cool kids who prefer PetNat to Champagne will love. Visually, it's misty from fine sediment. Explosive nose that is straight-up cherry candy; it's fresh, it's fruity, it's fun. A little unusual, a little green, but begs you to taste. Over time, earthy aromas and floral notes chime in. Palate rewards with something slightly more serious than the nose. It's balanced and still fruit forward, but there's some savory herbs in the mix. There is still ample acidity and a touch of tannic structure for further aging. Medium force finish with good length. Feels significantly more substantial in weight and flavor density than your typical Brouilly. Overall, a pleasant experience that will only offend a few people... ;) *Alex Foillard is the son of the well-known Morgon producer, Jean Foillard. After his education and wine-making internships, at the age of 24, Alex purchased about a hectare in Brouilly and a hectare in Cote de Brouilly. 2016 was his first official vintage, so this 2017 is pretty early in his game. *I'd say Alex follows his father's natural wine-making techniques: whole cluster, natural yeasts, no additives, no filtration, etc.
