  • 2016 Clos Apalta Le Petit Clos

Nose of black cherries and dark fruit with some herbs and a touch of freshly sliced, green bell pepper with occasional whiffs of violets. Palate echoes. This wine really explodes in the mouth for a Chilean cab (usually more refined and smooth) and follows with big vegetal/herbal finish. There is plenty of acidity and some tannins remain, so plenty of aging room left. At the end of the day, a little disappointing given high professional marks, and I think it has to do with this wine's more vegetal/herbal elements. I did enjoy it though, just expected more and different... *Le Petit Clos is Clos Apalta's second wine. *2016 vintage comprised of: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4%Merlot, and 1% Carmenère. *Clos Apalta winery is owned by Lapostolle.

  • 2019 Alta Vista Malbec Single Vineyard Alizarine Vineyard

Nose of dark black cherries, dried flowers or potpourri, and cocoa. Palate echoes but focused more on dark cocoa and fruit. The entire palate is engaged and the wine has a nice, medium-powered finish that extends for ages with a bright, almost minty, spicy wave. Some tannins remain and good acidity. *Alta Vista was founded in 1998 and occupies a winery built in the late 1800s. It's currently owned by Frenchman, Count Patrick d'Aulan whose family once owned the Piper-Heidsieck Champagne house. *Alizarine is one of three single-vineyard offerings. 100% Malbec from ungrafted root-true vines planted in 1923. *7,576 bottles produced for this 2019 vintage.

  • 2022 Cave Sabledoc Sable de Camargue Dune Gris de Gris

Fruity and floral nose of strawberries, citrus rind, and white flowers. Palate mirrors adding a touch of spice. Easy drinking; crisp and refreshing. Medium-minus flavor density. Mild to medium finish. Raising a glass to Frank Herbert, as the primary reason for this purchase was the word, "Dune" splashed on the label. In the case of this wine, "Dune" refers to the fact that the vines are grown atop sand dunes. *Made from Grenache, Carignan, and Merlot. *The winery, Cave Sabledoc, is a cooperative of 120 winegrowers on 700 hectares. *Sable de Camargue or "Sand of Camargue" is an IGP in eastern Languedoc where the vines are planted on sand dunes next to the sea or inland between lagoons and salt marshes.

1/4/2023 7:08:00 PM - Welcome aboard the Crazy Train, comrade. My father took me to Dallas in 1974 (he was not E Howard Hunt) on what was quite an important trip in my development - we went on to Mexico and seeing the contrast was formative. I like your photo and Brussels is a splendid city - I say that as one who dislikes cities. I see you recently had the Rieussec; have you had the chance to compare with d'Yquem and if so, thoughts?
