Saturday, July 18, 2020 - Man. Were the hills on fire in 2016? This tastes like liquid smoke taint! By far the smokiest wine I think I've ever had. Chalky and tannic, but without any bitterness. Good acidity carries it long, long. It's rather young and will probably really shine in a few years, but still a great encounter now for its wayward, wild child qualities. I love how Pax makes such original and unique Syrah's. And also nice that they're lower alcohol. Cool encounter!

1/12/2021 10:10:00 PM - The smokiness is the Griffins Lair Terroir. It is quite unique in aCalifornia Syrah if you’ve never had it before. I love it. After the smoke there is usually more savory, Northern Rhône style flavors like bacon fat. I just ordered some of this. Arnot Roberts makes a GL Syrah as does Bedrock. The Arnot Roberts was the smokiest I’ve ever tasted. I think it was 2010. I’d have to look back at tasting notes.
