Friday, March 20, 2015 - The first clue that something was amiss was the fact that the cork easily popped in half as I was trying to pull it out. The initial smell was actually fantastic… warm apple pie and citrus. Seemed like I had a winner in my hand. Color was amber but not too horrible… not out of the line for 10 year old Chard. But the first sip… sherry. Underneath the butterscotch you can tell that this once was a wine of complexity and power, with a nice, oily body and hints of apple, overripe pear and peaches. Most of the notes I’ve read for this wine mention bracing acidity but in this bottle it was 100% gone. GRRR.
