Friday, February 17, 2023 - This gets the prize as the most classically styled Bordeaux I've tasted from the vintage. Hey kids, what if I told you it wasn't so long ago they were all built this way? True story! It opens with a kaleidoscopically complex aroma albeit all too briefly before turning more reticent. The palate combines red and blue fruits with something vaguely smoky and grainy. The fruit is on that bleeding edge of ripeness with an unapologetic streak of old-school cabernet bitterness and ripping, thick-skinned tannins that manage to be less drying than you'd expect for something so lacking in slutty fruit sweetness. It feels palpably clenched, a wine that will have to blossom and unwind itself in time rather than just mellowing out. And it will. In the meanwhile, drinking it for exactly what it is and reveling in all its clenched, edgy glory is a perfectly satisfying way to spend an evening too.
