2019 Bordeaux Tasting, MW tasting (Vintner's Hall, London): 49% Mer 43% CS 8% CF, 15%, bottle open 2-3hr before Big, bold, heady, deep fruit core, some overripe black fruit notes, heavy floral notes Palate utterly elegant, juicy tannins, a touch warm (but not for 15%), blue and black fruit, licorice, med to full body, long finish. Very youthful, you can feel the warmth more as it expands in the glass

This gets the prize as the most classically styled Bordeaux I've tasted from the vintage. Hey kids, what if I told you it wasn't so long ago they were all built this way? True story! It opens with a kaleidoscopically complex aroma albeit all too briefly before turning more reticent. The palate combines red and blue fruits with something vaguely smoky and grainy. The fruit is on that bleeding edge of ripeness with an unapologetic streak of old-school cabernet bitterness and ripping, thick-skinned tannins that manage to be less drying than you'd expect for something so lacking in slutty fruit sweetness. It feels palpably clenched, a wine that will have to blossom and unwind itself in time rather than just mellowing out. And it will. In the meanwhile, drinking it for exactly what it is and reveling in all its clenched, edgy glory is a perfectly satisfying way to spend an evening too.

Perhaps seeing a 100 Pt score is not a surprise here, but the devil is in detail as every vintage carries a unique signature, and this is the point of tasting and comparing. I am jealous of the younger generation of consumers that will be able to compare the 2018, 2019, and 2020 on maturity, as each vintage has its own strong points and character. The 2019 offers a vibrant, rich, refined, powerful, concentrated, smoky profile with countless layers of roasted, smoked red and black fruits, herbs, spice-box, cigar wrapper, cedar, and burnt leaves. Even though this is incredibly dense and intense, it is also light on its feet. Effortless to drink, with a beautiful, elegant, silky, refined finish that surpasses the 60-second mark, this will be seen by future generations as one of the great vintages of Haut Brion. Drink from 2032-2075.
Very young yet already very complex and fine. Dense, concentrated fruit, tobacco, black berries - and it goes on and on. As with the other young wines, this closes down quickly. #Marchal

98 vvPunkte (49% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 15% Alkohol. 2025-2050 vvWine.ch
