Tuesday, August 17, 2021 - Decanted 3 hours. Dark. This has the very particular grape flavor that is young Aglianico. Darkly mysterious. Not particularly floral or perfumed - this is all dark fruit and savory notes of cedar and earth. A wine of considerable textural weight on the palate - the wine is in no way delicate or lifted or pretty. There is depth to the fruit and one senses a lot still to come. It is still tight. Not yet complex. And the tannins are fully ripe but big and need quite a bit of time. i don’t know if you can make an Aglianico for early consumption like a Langhe Nebbiolo but this suggests you cannot in this vintage. I understand 2016 to be a great classically structured vintage for Aglianico in Campania, so no one should be surprised you might need to wait several years on this. I would encourage stashing a few of these away to try again in 6 or 7 years - its an Irpinia of formidable proportions. Only a slight lack of length today betrays it's more modest pedigree. Surely a terrific value. Just wait.
