2019 RdV Vineyards Lost Mountain

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

92 Points

Sunday, October 23, 2022 - Enjoyed at a tasting/tour at the Vineyard. Didn't take any detailed notes. Went down smoothly. Very typical notes of a Virginia Bordeaux blend. At $200+ a bottle, this has to be the most overpriced wine I've ever come across. As a huge supporter of Virginia wines, I hope that the wines at the RdV will improve over the next decade, but I'll never be buying any of them personally. 92-93

11/4/2022 7:35:00 PM - You know I made an account on this website just to respond to this comment, and how much I truly disagree with this statement. For starters, MSRP on this bottle is $120 not $200+, the person who wrote this comment is only looking at the resale price of this bottle because of how coveted it is and it instantly selling out, the 2019 RDV lineup perhaps is the finest growth an east coast American vineyard has EVER had produced. This bottle will easily score a 95 and most likely a 98+ from Robert Parker, I just completely with this persons thoughts on Virginias finest wine, and truly believe RDV will make Virginia the most successful wine producer east of the big 3 (Cali, Oregon, Washington). This bottle made RDV become the very first east coast "American Grand Cru" winery, do not pass this by

I’m a long time allocation member and that’s what it cost. That is not the resale value. Now is that a fair price? That’s debatable, but it’s comparable to many $200-250 Napa wines.

11/5/2022 3:57:00 PM - Thank you for your comments. MVSXN, I will reiterate that this is a good wine overall, not just a good Virginia wine. It's a top-five Virginia wine, IMO, but this is far from achieving the 95-98 scores from well-known reviewers unless RdV himself bribes RP with his coveted annual allocation. I'm a huge Virginia wine supporter and go to 50+ Virginia vineyards annually. I have friends who share their annual RdV allocation with me, and I'm a little disappointed every year. The price increase to $225/bottle this year was just another reason to question this vineyard. I want to see this vineyard be as successful as you probably do, but this has a long way to go IMO.

11/5/2022 4:22:00 PM - connorpksmith Judging by your TN and cellar I assume you don’t drink a good deal of Bordeaux? And everyone’s tastes are different and that’s one of the things that makes wine fun. RdV has a waitlist and while I’m not happy with the price hike people are buying it. There are a lot of Napa wines that have inflated prices that are not justified by the wine itself. With that said, as a big Napa and Bordeaux drinker I think RdV clearly stands out in Virginia. To call if the most overpriced wine almost sounds like anger towards the winery and not the quality of the wine.

11/6/2022 9:32:00 AM - wdcwineguys Bordeaux is not my favorite style, so my cellar does lean away from that, but I feel I've had enough to know good from great. I didn't think my public cellar, or my not all-inclusive tasting notes would be a factor in my posting an objective review on a platform for wine lovers to do exactly that. We all have different taste preferences and advocate for different regions and producers. I'm guessing you're an advocate of RdV with the vineyard in your profile picture. Again, (IMO) RdV wines are good (91-93), but they're not great wines (94+), which I hope will improve in the next couple of decades. Price isn't a factor in my reviews, but I do hope RdV doesn't continue down the road of overpriced Napa cult wines.

11/7/2022 11:51:00 AM - connorpksmith I take no issue with your comments regarding the rating on the wine. Wine is subjective and everyone has different tastes. What I found odd was your comment that it's the most overpriced wine, which I think is unfounded. While I'm a longtime member of RdV I am not connected to them in any processional way, don't work in the industry and didn't even remember my profile photo was from their vineyard until you pointed it out. They are producing wine in a fashion that is similar to many high-priced Napa wines and they have a waiting list. This is what has pushed RdV's price up. Is Screaming Eagle (retailing for $2500/bottle) 3-4 time better than a bottle of Scarecrow at $750/bottle? No, but it's supply and demand. I know too many VA wine people who hate RdV specifically because of the cost of entry and that's how your TN comes off. In fact, you posted your TN prior to the wine's release which made it seem that was the case.
