Saturday, September 11, 2021 - One of the greatest hits for Clos du Marquis, the 1985 is one of the few iterations of this bottling in this era that really nips at the heels of Las Cases itself. It shares with the 1985 Las Cases an immensely charming style, wafting from the glass with a demonstrative bouquet of blackcurrant fruit mingled with cigar box, loamy soil and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with an enveloping core of fruit, ripe acids and melting tannins, it's impressively complete and penetrating. In a blind tasting, this would best many grander labels, and given how consistently excellent it has been from my cellar, I'm at a loss to account for some of the negative reviews to be read here.
