1985 Las Cases vs Clos du Marquis: Not close to the Las Cases in any way unfortunately. Very green on nose but much fresher on palate, bright, sappy red fruits but lacking in depth or complexity. Would have been good by itself but paled in comparison to the Las Cases.

Drank next to the 1985 Las Cases. I couldn’t identify any sibling resemblance here. It was clear from the outset that the Las Cases was a superior wine in every way. Not sure what the previous notes mentions but this bottle definitely doesn’t reach the heights of Las Cases….not even close.

What a wine! So lively and fresh, still retaining a lot of youthful redness in its colour. The nose was enticing and clearly St. Julien, with unmistakable black currant bushy notes and an elegant, ripe fruit profile. The palate certainly delivered, but slowly faded over 30 minutes. No rush, but it's terrific now.

One of the greatest hits for Clos du Marquis, the 1985 is one of the few iterations of this bottling in this era that really nips at the heels of Las Cases itself. It shares with the 1985 Las Cases an immensely charming style, wafting from the glass with a demonstrative bouquet of blackcurrant fruit mingled with cigar box, loamy soil and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with an enveloping core of fruit, ripe acids and melting tannins, it's impressively complete and penetrating. In a blind tasting, this would best many grander labels, and given how consistently excellent it has been from my cellar, I'm at a loss to account for some of the negative reviews to be read here.

Was it shot? I think not - and in fact chilling it helped to resurrect some of its fruit. It was however a tired wine that had given its best and just wanted to sit in front of the fire with a blanket over its legs talking about the good old days.

a mixed bag of poorly stored wine. the best was a classic '85 blend of fleshy yet savoury fruit. a wine blessed with an easy charm, not huge but pretty complete and a very enjoyable example of a midweight bordeaux.

This is drinking well. Nice, complex bordeaux nose. Medium-bodied and well-balanced.

Dusty red fruits and earth notes. Well balanced. Still alive and kicking; indeed enjoyable.
