92 Points

Saturday, September 29, 2012 - The wine was barely enjoyable right after popping the cork as well as after three hours and five hours in the decanter due to a massive wall of tannin. We drank the half-bottle after nine hours aeration in the decanter. The Port offered roses, dark berries, fig, cherry, black currant, minty eucalyptus, tooth paste, shoe polish, charcoal, some chocolate, spices, some liquorice, tea and a hint of tobacco on the nose. On the palate the wine showed dark fruits, blueberry, blackberry, chocolate, cane sugar, spices, tea, tobacco, hints of nuts, a mineral touch and palate-coating tannins. The Port was smooth despite the massive, firm but ripe tannins. It tasted medium dry and seemed dryer than the 1997 and 2000, and had very good length. A complex, long-lived Port. One can sense that it will be a killer once it opens up, but there is no point in opening it now and I won’t touch my other bottles for at least ten years. 92 points for the time being.
