Saturday, November 21, 2009 - Very glad others mentioned the oxidative nose, or I might have thought the bottle was madeirized or otherwise flawed: we're not talking about a subtle hint, here, it really gives has a pronounced scent of sherry right out of the bottle, along with some red fruit. No heat at all, in spite of the 14.5% alcohol. None of the sherry tones followed through on the palate, which was primarily red berries, mainly currants and cherries. Very sharp, juicy acidity, and a medium-length, strong-flavored finish made this a particularly food-friendly wine - right up there with the '06 Jadot Clos de la Commaraine as my favorite dry wine of the night.

None of that does anything to convey how truly different this wine was from anything I've had in a long time, though: I suppose "orange wines" are a parallel, among the whites, but this is clearly a red - and a good one. I'm curious as to how the next bottle will strike me: I suspect the novelty made this especially fun.
