95 Points

Tuesday, February 5, 2013 - This remains my favorite Chateau, though Angelus will give it a good run for the money when it comes to my absolute preference. Hard to believe that 2001 was considered an "off" or "sleeper" of a year. This is a fantastic, textbook Lalande. The nose wafts of briar, black cherry, cassis, menthol, tar, and pencil. As for the palate - imagine being stuck in a briar patch (without the thorns of course) and having your friends hurling black and red cherries at you, all while taking notes with a No. 2 pencil! That is where the palate takes you. Major briar, major fruit, and major pencil. This was such an enjoyable bottle of wine and I am convinced there there is room to grow. Beautiful balance with sorted tannin, this will continue to gain in complexity. Enjoy it now, but enjoy it even more in 5 to 10 years. Highly recommended for seeking out at a good price. 95+ Pts
