Nicely aged powerful Pauillac! A blend of 45 % CS, 35 % Merlot, 12 % CF and 8 % PV: tobacco, bell pepper, black fruit, leather, smoke, cigar box, medium plus body, nice long dry finish.

Big and oaky, with a strong slightly unpleasant finish of tar. Quite a heavy extraction here, with a robust structure. Long finish. Some complexity. Drinking now, may improve.

It took quite a while for this wine to come out of its shell (2+ hours), but once it did, it was a pleasant experience. Had a level of acidity that was a bit surprising and fairly thin for Pauillac. Some fruit, but mostly tertiary notes. Tobacco, cedar.

A 3hr slow-ox in Reidel BDXs & btl prior to dinner did the trick. Drinking so much better than my first un-impressive btl back in 2014 & there's still some upside, I think. With just one btl though, no regrets where we found it. Classic Pauillac with cigar ash, berries & forest floor on the nose. Lead pencil, more cigar and red fruit on an elegant mostly resolved palate. Very enjoyable with Nita's cast iron flank steak. Purchased a few years down the road from release but spent most its time in my wine cabinet. Served in the high 50s/low 60s.

Stunning and full of tertiary notes with some primary fruit still going strong and a well balanced mouthfeel. Classic Pauillac that still has 5-10 years ahead.

This was singing tonight. Decanted one hour. Intense aromas of cassis, mushroom, green pepper, and cedar planks. Just lovely in the mouth with dark red berries carrying the load along with tobacco and mint. Deep and powerful but with plenty of acidity providing raciness and tension. Long, edgy, resinous, finish. What a great ride! Drink now or hold for another 5 years, at least. Great stuff.

Tasted blind: tobacco, red fruit nose. Good concentration of fruit, medium body and straight forward compared to '82 Grand Puy Lacoste. A little horsey and a mineral snap on the finish suggests a low level of Brett. A classic Bordeaux.
Started out fairly reticent and boring but quickly gained intensity/complexity/weight. Almost as good as the first bottle of this I had a couple years ago. Just a lovely vintage of Pichon Lalande.

Did not get much attention on night 1, but it's lovely on night 2. Blackberry, cedar, floral notes, and a touch of mint on the nose. Medium-full bodied palate, silky texture, and more dark fruit with the classic cedary edge on a satisfying finish. This is at peak and should not fade any time soon. 94

Took it to a restaurant so not enough time to decant. Aired for about 30 minutes but 1-2 hours would have been preferable.
Aroma was solid right from the pour. Scents of ripe berries and blue flowers were obvious even without having to put nose to glass. Colour was deep garnet and shimmering. Really lovely hue. Palate was surprisingly weak on fruit. Wood, spice, smoke and lots and lots of leather. Not in a bad way, but sweetness from fruit was demure, or at least overshadowed by the warm elements. Nice medium-weight in the mouth with good acidity and a very satisfying finish. Make no mistake, it's a lovely wine but not up to the standards of what I know the Comtesse is capable of. No signs of fading and will hold for at least another five years.

Pronounced nose intensity with peppermint, toast, black fruits, spices. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Drinking within its drinking cycle. Decanted 1 hour. Will improve with more decanting time. Will probably not improve much except for secondary/tertiary notes.

Remarkable stuff, if you fancy a feminine side of the Pauillac, this is for you and certainly for me! Beautiful ruby rouge in colour! Subtle nose of ripe pure wild berry fruits! The palate is of course delicate and silky smooth, having said that, it is wine full of energy and gave you a very long finish, the attack of the wild fruits goes on and on! An enlightening experience will put a smile on your face! A first growth quality!

I thought maybe the 2001 would be able to step into the shoes of the 1996, which has always been an amazing wine. But "no" this is a completely different wine, made far more in the Parker style - it is really monolithic. I wonder whether this is biggest Pichon ever made? There is prominent charry oak here, which remains throughout but does recede a a little. This far fuller than you might expect if you know the Pichon Comtesses of the 1990's, nonetheless it retains some of the famous Comtesse elegance and feminine nature.
This has the Comtesse perfume, along with generous red and black fruits. Notes of leather revealing its age. Medium finish and largely straightforward still. This is still young and very primary. It will be better on 5 to 10 years, though it can be drunk now I would consider it a waste. Wil be very long lived.

Decanted to remove sediment. Lovely BDX nose of cassis, dark berries, leather chair, and a subtle vegetal aroma. Medium to light-weight in the mouth with softened black cherry and cough drop leading the way. More depth and power would have netted another few points but this gentler offering still worked rather well. Likely won't improve but will hold.

Have been waiting to drink this since I received futures back in 2004. While we did decant over 2 hours, this was wonderful right out of the bottle. Soft tannins, red fruit, cigar, and spice. Seems to be in it's perfect drinking window with many more years to enjoy.

All bottles at similar quality points, we were celebrating my grandfather’s 100th birthday and I provided the wine. I fully echo Jeff Leve’s note, though I will not wait more than 3 years to consume the remaining bottles since the additional time will not enhance its current standing. All the first-time bordeaux drinkers picked this as their WON since the grapes and tannins are fully integrated and the nose, mouthfeel and taste are balanced and very pleasing. Drink ‘em if you’ve gottem.

It is hard to believe I have not tasted this in 10 years. But the past decade has been good for the wine, which is now fully mature. Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, fresh, round, and lush, here you find loads of ripe, plummy red berries, hints of chocolate, tobacco leaf, herbs, cigar box, and a touch of spice. This beauty should remain at this level for at least another decade.
Nice and balanced. Unmistakably bordeaux. But a bit shy. Showing some of its stuff but in a timid and restraint way. The tannins are soft snd supple, but it seems it still have some way to go till maturity. Hoping it will strut its stuff with time in cellar.

No easy task to be the wine immediately following a majestic 47 Borgogno Barolo Cannubi, but this PLL refused to back down. Splendidly perched between youth and maturity, it was refined, sophisticated and riveting.

Wonderful example of the late de Lencquesaing-era Comtesse, a historic period for the chateau. It's not far behind the 2000 - more reserved in personality compared to the dazzling fireworks display the 2000 puts on, but not any lighter in material. The old vine petit verdot abolished by the current management makes up 14% of the blend here, which if not the highest ever must be somewhere up there, and it makes its presence felt with a sapid spine that starts out making the wine quite taut but it loosens up as it airs out and warms up. The fruit has both red and black elements and doesn't taste remotely advanced enough to be 21 years past harvest, which is confounding my designs to drink more recent vintages at full maturity and thus frankly a little depressing to me. But it's still developed nicely considering it was all oak as of my last note on it but now there's barely any sign of wood at all. And it can still be had at a friendly tab - I'll be on the lookout for more.

Gang of 4 in Covid19 times; Pauillac: Beautiful and luxurious, mature bouquet with autumn forest, cigar box and stable smells. On the palate vanilla, some sweetness, minerals, herbs, beautifully fresh acidity and slightly drying tannin. In a perfect drinking window now.

Quick decant as the tannins were resolved. Classic P-L notes of bell pepper on the nose. I've never described a wine as "silky," but this '01 was just that. The tertiary characteristics were just beginning to show so another or year or two might see this wine get another few points.

Bastille day lunch. Tasted blind. Mature Medoc was everyone's guess. Pauillac or St.Julien. This showed really well, good typicity around wet forest floor, earth, cigar box. On the lighter side, as expected for 2001. Mature

24 Vintages of Pichon Lalande: All wines tasted blind. A few general observations: 1) Most wines showed the typical Pichon Lalande elegance. This is certainly one of the more delicate and elegant Paulliacs. 2) The relatively high Merlot content (often 20-30%) showed in many wines with fine, fresh rhubarb, rosehip and floral aromas I wouldn’t necessarily associate with a Medoc - all adding to the sensuous quality of the wines. 3) A few vintages showed the very sexy burnt sugar/coffee notes you associate with the 1982 Lalande or a Mouton or a Cheval Blanc - unfortunately, not to an extent and with an intensity to truly excite. 4) Following the legendary 1982 and until the most recent vintages (starting with 2014 but especially with 2016) there are three decades of pleasant Pichon Lalandes but hardly any vintage has the depth and length of truly great wines. The best wine tonight was the 2009 (rated 95+ points) with many more in the 92-94 point category.
TN: Very light nose with some red fruits and coffee notes. On the palate this is very soft and round and with some swirling more aromas came trough with red fruit, some darker berries, cola, herbs and minerality. Not super complex but quite harmonious and all embedded in a fairly fresh and fine structure. Not much tertiary development yet but I guess it has a enough fruit to gain a bit more complexity over the next 5 to 10 years.

Just gorgeous. Enjoyable from first pour after a 30 min decant, really came alive after two hours as is typical of Lalande. A bit funky initially, which blew off to reveal Deep pure delicious layers of medium weight fresh pure Pauillac in all its earthy cassis glory, with a dollop of plums and leaves. I’m loving 01s, more so than many “better” vintages.

The 2001 Pichon Lalande is still a touch young for prime time drinking, but it opens up nicely after a few hours in the decanter, mingling aromas of cassis and plums with hints of Cuban cigar, raw cocoa and loamy soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with ripe tannins and succulent acids, it's lively and nicely concentrated. Though it's appealing today, I suspect that with another six or seven years' bottle age, it will really start to surprise with its charm and plenitude.

Lots of black fruit, cedar, and tobacco. Tannins still lurking at the finish, but overall the wine comes across as elegant and refined. Enjoyed immensely.
My last bottle. You could smell the blackcurrants the very moment it was poured, but interestingly it was not so obvious when sniffing the wine glass bowl. Some wood / pencil shaving notes, some mushroom (think mushroom soup). Light and resolved tannins. Body on the medium minus side for sure.

Second bottle in 2 days. Super crumbly cork. The wine however is fabulous! Open and welcoming. Almost Burgundian spice and floral notes. Mid weight and a lighter Bordeaux but not the worse for it. Very gentle, caressing, easy to drink and enjoy. Nice cassis and soil and leather notes but very fresh and clean. So easy to drink. Not the most complex and don’t see this getting much better so crack open your bottles and enjoy. Best served at a cool feeling 15-16C and it is even more refreshing and delicious.

Fresh red fruit on the nose; with a little bit of pleasant musk on the first pour, which quickly dissipates. Lean on the palate, with a bit of bitterness making it seem thin. Decent acidity. Taken in the round, reminds me a little bit of an awkward, young Burgundy. Will decant the rest and see if it improves.
About 2 hours after the initial decant, it has taken on some weight - possibly too much. Some heat on the nose. Mushrooms, tar, density on the palate. There is some acidity, which keeps things interesting. Feels a little heavy handed; may need more time. There is a bit of sweetness, and the bitterness has receded somewhat but is still there. There is also pleasant pepper. Long, tongue-clinging finish.

45 minute decant. Needs more. Wonderful cherry nose. Soft red fruit, cedar but a bit diffuse and not as structured as I expected. Tannins are going away but still some grip at the end. This is a good but not great wine. The nose is better than the taste.

Identical note to a year ago. 11th bottle from a case bought en primeur and the best bottle yet. Big blackcurrant and cedar nose with some pleasant sous bois/undergrowth. Still lots of tannins yet remains elegant and balanced. Long finish. On the plateau where it’ll drink beautifully for several years at least. A little light on the palate but more than makes up for it on the nose.

Principal wine for New Years' Eve dinner. Last drank this wine on the same occasion five years ago. It has improved during the five year period. I'm guessing that it is at or nearing the peak of its maturity. Opened two hours before dinner and decanted an hour before dinner. A classic Pichon Lalande: elegant and rich. Wonderful bouquet of subdued but obvious dark cherry, and more obvious notes of graphite, leather, and cassis. So tasty. Finished the dregs twenty-four hours later and held up well. Still tasty.

A Lalande sleeper, same approach they took to 95 and 09. Seems to be very little time on the skins. Herbs and bright berry fruit forward. Oak has completely integrated. This was ridiculously good upon opening 96+, but with some air, the dreaded volatile acidity showed up. Let it rest for 3 days and it blew off. Just finished the bottle with a broiled beef burger and fresh cut avacado, just some salt pepper. Absolutely delicious. A great Lalande for the price that is ready to drink. The tannins are very drying on the finish if you are not drinking it with a fatty dish.
This was drained pretty quickly. Showing some maturity. Darker fruits, quite spicy and herbal, clearly showing the herbal side of cab. Elegant and well crafted. Still has some upside but quite nice now.

I love this wine!!!! Black currant, silky long finish, medium to full body. Awoke after 17 years and it's alive an kicking... Took nearly 2 hours to round itself out, but it became spectacular... I have had many Pichon Lalandes over the years ('88, '89, '90, '94-97, '12, '14) This one is closest to the '96. If you like a heavier Pichon, this is a pretty good one to sample now. It could probably go another 10 years easy, but not sure it gets any better than it is now... Good QPR considering what the '95-96 bring...

Last tasted two years ago, there has not been any further evolvement, and I think the wine has hit its plateau, and there really is no upside in not consuming it now. The nose is full of blackcurrent, plum, and cedar, and is mature in its aroma and very attractive. The palate is pleasantly tannic and has great balance with the fruit. However, it is simplistic in the mouth and clipped on the finish, and falls short of the good and great vintages of the estate. All in all it is a very enjoyable and approachable wine, but not one for be laying down for the long haul.
Decanted for 3 hours. Nice cherry bouquet, maybe a bit of tea and cedar. Solid structure, and integrated tannins with a bit more life remaining. Well-balanced front, mid, and back palate of cherry, plums, red currant, and herbs with a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied with a long finish of fruit and a bit of vanilla. Beautiful wine !

Was a little tannic when popped and poured but that quickly dissipated. Became really silky. Had it with Japanese grilled meats so at some point I didn’t know what smells came from where, but we got rose / floral, a little mint, tea dust, incense.

Admittedly Pichon Comtesse needs time. But this (no longer youngster) 2001 is either miles away from its optimum or an imposter. An almost imperceptible nose, with some vague black fruit and hints of wood. Light (yes!) bodied in the mouth, the wine „ticks“ a few Bordeaux boxes (berries, chocolate, licorice, tobacco), but remains uninspiring, even on a nice piece of beef. Interestingly the wine came back on a cigar (yes, Pauillacs are good at this), but pleeeaase next time convince me that spending 50+ € on such a bottle is worth it, as it is annoying to drink „head“ wines (those bottles you spend a bloody fortune and then have to explain to your disappointed friends why they don‘t deliver). I had plenty of that in Bordeaux.

Decanted and drank over 2 hours. This continues to be one of my favorite vintages of Pichon Lalande to drink right now, and still has that classic Lalande nose. It really opened up nicely over time, with a gorgeous nose of black currant, leather, violets, cigar box, pencil shavings, and with lots of herbal notes. Medium-bodied on the palate, with a nice silky texture. Some of the hard edges of a few years ago have softened. Tannins give it nice structure, but are now very soft and silky. Medium-plus length finish, with medium acidity and a nice earthy edge. Still has quite a bit of time left, but this is clearly a great time to drink this.

Some Fine Older Bordeaux and Cabs (Capitalle Grille, Mpls, MN): Same bottle as Chablis28. Decanted for a couple hours, drank 1 glass over an hour. there was a spirited discussion about this wine being potentially corked. I'm not saying, I'm just saying, this is not corked - period. It has a strong herbal, green streak that seems under ripe, graphite, some damp earth, dark berry, wood, tannin. Not showing as well as the '02 side by side. Might be the youth, might be the vintage, might be something else, but I'm not buying the corked angle...

Hard to figure this wine out. Is it flawed and corked as my BDX buddy Steve suggested or just in a weird, too young, stage. I could certainly see "too young" coming into play as I had a very difficult time concluding it was corked for sure. OTOH, Steve has a great palate and can pick up flaws quicker than I. Another of my buddies blamed it on the high percentage of Petite Verdot. This wine is a total mystery and I was uncertain about another btl tasted in July 2016 that belonged to a friend. I had since chalked up my impressions, back then, to me and was eager to try one of mine at age 16+. Anyway you square it, this wine was drinking very young and had a lot of oak to chew on too. That, after I decanted it for 2.5 hours, put it back in the btl and removed the cork at the venue upon arrival. It was one of the last of many btls we drank that night too. Disappointing, to be sure at age 17 from a not overripe year. I'll hold my last btl till at least 2021.

A step down from prior bottles. Rather stinky on opening but an hour in the decanter and this was minty and herbaceous on the nose. Light to medium bodied palate, firm tannins but quite fresh and accessible. This seemed more disjointed than anything. Probably better to hold other bottles a few years.

BBQ at Pokai Parera (Pokai Parera, Ekatahuna, New Zealand): Outstanding wine from a less intense vintage, showing superb wine making skill and a real sense of place. Classic lifted Medoc nose of graphite, currants, green olive, and oak. In the mouth, pinpoint structure, fine length and a great live of complexity. Its overall mouthfeel and impression is one of balance - in a leaner, earthy, and ethereal manner (certainly compared to the warmer Napa wines it was served with). Fine ripeness and an ease of drinking make this a great experience. I think this would be a fabulous choice for a restaurant wine (if someone else is paying - also those Harlans!).

(Single-blind tasting) Fullish nose. Black currant, cedary oak, gravel and herbaceous notes. Dense and deep. Roast coffee. Fullish, dense, still tannic palate. Toasty oak and coffe. But also generous black currant, dark plum fruit. A bit dry tannins and finish. Classic. Correctly identified as the Pauillac in the 2001 tasting. Good now and probably for 3-5 more years.

Double decanted for a good hour and a half. Decanting is very much advisable. Such a pretty, elegant classic bordeaux. Well evolved and showing quite a few secondary touches, leather, light earthy on the nose but also floral at times and very pretty. Quite dark and fresh in color, fine aromatics on the nose, flowers and spices, perhaps some smoked ham, enticing entry, fresh fruit, a touch of mint, good mid palate popping through with aeration, decent length. Still very, very primary. There are some tannins lurking still that could marry well to the fruit and textures. Showing some nobility with finesse and silky in the mouth. Very youthful, barely displaying secondary flavors, a baby. While this is outstanding and fairly open, I would hold another 3-5 years to check in. From a pristine bottle purchased during en primeur. 93+

Not mine to score, however, tonight I sold 2 bottles to the same table of 4 as sommelier/waiter at Bernard's Restaurant, Ridgefield, Connecticut, USA. Both bottles in excellent condition and consistent; minimal sediment, nose of earthy fruits and what is probably familiar Pichon Comtesse. Apparently ready to drink according to the guests this evening, and concurrent with other 2001 Bordeaux I have tasted recently.

A good showing. Had double decanted for approx 90 minute before carting off to an event. Deep purple coloring, very elegant violet and plum aromas. I thought this opened very nicely in the glass. Some cassis, plum and kirsch. Among a range ofsome mid 90s and 05s from various Pauillac and St. Estephes that were its company, I thought this Lalande was the most 'in the zone' - it terms of readiness and palate. Approachable with a decant but still has the structure to be interesting over the next decade plus. Gets a BT thumbs up.

Couldn't figure this wine out last night. Is it already at its peak or in semi dumb faze? Hum, I own two of these. Have to think about when I should try one of mine. This might be one off vintage that doesn't turn into an overachiever.

I thought the flavor was a little more one dimensional than last time (2 years ago) and the fruit was a little too faded, but the tannins have really softened, creating a nice plush mouthful and a sweet vanilla finish. This wine went really well with steak.

Unlike some other reviewers, the tannins seem mostly resolved to me in this medium bodied, delicious wine. I don't think the fruit is deep enough to smooth out the mild tannic finish over time. I am drinking mine up over the next several years.

A mature and balanced wine. I disagree that it will improve and think this wine has reached its drinking plateau (as with most of the 2001s). The residual tannic harshness, I do not think will resolve but saying that it does not stop this being a very enjoyable drink.

Still felt a little young, this could use a few more years in the cellar. Still enjoyable at this point, but there is room for improvement with time. Good wine in a so-so vintage.

Classic Pauillac nose but with a sweet oak, brown sugar overtone on the front. Sweet fruit and oak up front, a little hollow in the middle then the slightly bitter tannin kicks in at the end. The tannin is still a bit strong and the wine is s bit disjointed. The oak needs to integrate another 3-5 years and to let the secondary flavored start to come forward. The fruit isn't very concentrated but this is still very beautiful wine, a little different than usual.

My favorite two vintages of this Chateau are '82 & the Cabernet dominated '96. However, this vintage is drinking GREAT now. Sweet Virginia tobacco, black currant & licorice, cedar, and green herb that must come from the Petit Verdot. The secondary and tertiary notes are ever present. Classic Pauillac with a sweetness in the nose and tannin that is so attractive and irresistible now. Decanted and consumed over a five hour period. I actually enjoyed it more in the first two hours vs the last three hours. It will continue to evolve nicely in the cellar, but it will just lose the fruit and the tobacco and leather will only become more pronounced. Purchased on release and has been cellared ever since. The best part? The price tag on the back of the bottle: $55.99. You can't even buy a bottle of Silver Oak for that. I love mature Bordeaux from great producers!

Blackcurrant and cedar. Sweet soft fruit. Starting to lose concentration mid palate. Still very long. Touch of bitterness on the finish does not detract. Really enjoyable now. Clearly on the downhill path. Drink up.

Patience rewarded! Opened and decanted in cellar 5 hours before drinking, let it warm up and then enjoyed with a grilled ribeye. The first sip (after decanting to ensure it was not corked) was all currant and green leaf tobacco. With the steak and after time, a different wine emerged. It was all soy, hoi sin, and black fruits integrated together into a nice, savory wine. I kept a part of the bottle in the decanted overnight, and the next day it was back to being a classic Pauillac, with some sweet black fruit, mineral, cedar, and tobacco on the nose and in the mouth. This wine changed as much as any I have had while enjoying it.

I enjoyed this a little more than my last bottle as it was slightly softer and more expressive. Needed 2hrs air to show well. Aromatic nose of bdx funk, mild green herbs, and strong cigar leaf and cedar spice. Palate was fine, slightly linear, but with a terrific red currant character and leafy herb quality. Lengthy finish. Drink or hold over the next 5-10yrs, but given its accessibility now, can be enjoyed now. Compared to the '01 Pontet Canet on the same night, this a little less "square" and with a little more complexity.

With Sandy. 7th time of tasting since '08 and drinking well since '13. Consistently big blackcurrant nose (apart from 1 slightly dumb nosed bottle at the Wine Society, the rest being from my own case en primeur). Barnyard noted on previous 2 occasions absent this time. Sweet soft fruit as a result of more Merlot than usual for the left bank. A little one dimensional to warrant a higher score, although could still improve. Long with touch of bitterness on the finish not detracting. Enjoyable and typically Comtesse. Will be at its best over the next few years.

Boring wine, lack of surprises, leathery to the nose with a long finish. To predictable for a french wine. I tried this wine throughout a year, not a single improvement , ready to go now.

Landmark Hotel Decanter Masterclass with Nicolas Glumineau. The long Indian Summer meant perfect conditions for the wines, warm days and cool nights. Wood spice, cedar, leather and black fruits were a delight on the nose. Returning on the palate with a kick of spice towards the end. Lovely finish.

A bit odd on the nose, a bit of barnyard, yeasty, with notes of cassis, graphite, spices. Quite powerful and masculine on the palate, very precise, fresh, a bit drying and lean. 89-91

decanted one hour. dark black-red to garnet rim; plummy, herbaceous & dark cocoa powder nose; med+ weight, notable for its lack of extracted characteristics; dry blackcurrants, dusty, earthy, some mint & green herbal qualities, tannins mostly resolved but still has time. kind of evoked pleasant memories of old school claret.
pan-roasted wild venison loin, red wine glace; roasted asparagus w/caramelized spring onion creme fraiche

Still quite young at age 14. This has power and depth, quite a complex wine and a good match for the Columbian steakhouse with Otis, Brett, and OD to celebrate the inception of HH racing LLC. This is a beauty with power that will mature over the next 5-10 years. No rush to drink it yet, it's got a decade or two left on it.

Remony's note says it perfectly - peaches, flowers, violets. This bottle, at least, showed its 14% Petit Verdot clearly. The green a bit too prominent and the result was something of an atypical Pichon Lalande...

Same bottle as previous Coravin sample, but this was much more expressive. Coffee, herb and mint on the nose. Nice open core of currants and some mint on the palate. Lengthy finish. This came across a quite typical for the estate, if a little understated compared to the big vintages. Based on the differences in how this bottle showed, seemed to need a slow-ox if drinking today.

A beautifully graded dark red colour to the rim. Oak and lemons on the nose, with distant floral overtones. Nothing that special, but then tasting gave so much more: a full tannic blanket was spread over it, but with some gorgeous sweet toffee and lemon juice dominating. Cherries and roast beef somehow combined in this changing, elusive palate. Acidity was present, apparently diluting, and the length was extended to about 40 seconds by the lemon and tannin. Very good.

Treated my parents to a sumptuous dinner at Tung Lok Heen (RWS), and decided to pop this. Though it was enjoyable and paired well with the Chinese food, I personally felt that it lacked complexity.

Coravin sample followed over 6hrs. Nose had a roasted, toasty profile for several hours until some typical back currant finally emerged. Palate showing a rather dark fruit profile, with coffee notes. A little muddled. Seems to lack the elegance and refinement typical of Lalande. Strong finish with fine mild tannins. Good but not great for this estate. Should have some improvement with time but I don't expect a large transformation in expression.

Decanted and drank over 2 hours, then let it sit for 5 hours prior to finishing it off. The evolution took this wine to a very nice place. Gorgeous Pauillac nose, with black currant, some roasted meat, leather, violet, pencil lead, and some mild barnyard funk (that blew off pretty quickly). Medium-bodied with a long finish. This was a really elegant wine that has a lot of life left. Firm tannins still abound.

Rich, quite intense nose of yeast, leather, cassis and hints of vanilla, but the surprise came from the first sip - very tannic, not at all what I had expected. Behind the cloak of quite bitter tannins, there is good fruit, although I found it hard to pinpoint which ones, and the intensity is not enough to cope at the moment. My cellar is cold, so this could be a later developer than others' bottles, but I'm not sure how this will turn out. Tasted good with a chicken casserole, but a little brittle and green on its own.

SAFW Reunion tasting. Seemed Pichon-like on the nose. Black cherry, cassis, tobacco, coffee beans, herbs, spice and cedar. Fairly intense and rich fruit. Balanced. Mature. A long, long finish.

At first I guessed this to be a much younger, possibly off-year Bordeaux -- it tasted clamped-down, with a weird middle. (Friend who brought it has had horrible bottle variation -- he's beginning to attribute it to provenance.) As it opened, it got way, *way* better -- the aromatics led the way, and the flavors then followed suit an hour later. Pencil shavings, spice, blueberries. (20-30 minutes in this would have been an 87 -- 60-90 in it jumped way up in interest level.)

This opens up after a 2 hour decant. You get a medium bodied, balanced wine with mild tannins and some acidity. The mid-palate is dense and the finish elongates as the wine opens. I look forward to this opening up further in the next few years.

Pop and pour. 15 minutes in the glass was all that was needed. Showing a little bricking at edges. Loads of tobacco, cassis, pencil shavings and then the blackberries and some blueberries emerge. A very good wine for this vintage and it is drinking at its peak now, so don't wait on it.

Fantastic nose. Lots of cedar and cigar and black currant. Wonderful expression. The wine was drinking well and the tannins are still nice and round, although the wine is still a little tight. I assume this one is just now opening up to the start of its' drinking window. I enjoyed the wine, but wished I had waited another five years to open it. I guess it is time to find another one online.

In a nice place out of .375. Starting to mellow out a bit, with the fruit adding a layer of depth. Still ripe and a tad oaky, this has become a little more savory, and a lot more interesting. I'd wait a bit longer, but this is pretty good and I'd buy more if the price were right.

This wine drank well after taking the cork off and letting it sit in the bottle for about 3.5 hours. Cedar, smoke, chocolate covered cherries, dark fruit, coffee grinds, and wet stone on the nose and palate. The finish is long and the fruit is nice. There is a lot going on here and every sip gives you something new.
I do think it would have been better if it aged for longer, probably 5 years or so. Elegant and subtle (unlike the big Tandem Pinot I tried the next day).

Pichon-Lalande Vertical Tasting (Mark Allen): What a nose on this--iron, spice, plum, smoke, cigar, truffle, black currant, cherry--stunningly beautiful nose; The palate was no slouch either with great balance--medium plus body, fine ample tannins, good acidity and beautiful flavors that mirrored the nose. I know not as heralded as the other great vintages tasted, but this was my WOTN. I think it's just in that perfect place right now and will likely stay there for a few years to come. (RP 93)

Colour: Dark red with black core without maturity edge Nose: black and red currants, cigar box, smoke, graphite
Palate: rich, tight and round tannins, medium body, Casssis, some vanilla, complex, elegant yet muscular at the same time, unobtrusive but noticeable acidity, yet harmonious and balanced, more rustic and rough, could be in 10 or 15 years but still harmonious, elegant and balanced come out.
Long rough, dry finish with lots of dry tannins and a dash of cigar box and cassis. Can improve next 5+ years by at least 2 Points.

Decanted for about an hour and then consumed over about an hour and a half. Evolved over that time but pleasant at all stages, including right out of the bottle. Drinking well now but no rush - lots of life left. Very typical Paulliac, subdued fruit, well integrated, good length. Great match for a rib eye roast.

Opened up after an hour (but by then it was mostly gone). I did enjoy this but I think it's the type of Bordeaux that is a bit heavier and in austere than I can appreciate. I prefer a bit more delicacy.

“Mixed Bag of Bordeaux”-Tasting (non-blind), in October 2013, Wine 4: This last wine of the flight we actually drank and not only tasted. We poured the wine into a decanter, served the first glass after about thirty minutes, poured the wine back into the rinsed bottle after about 2.5 hours and consumed it over two evening. The wine offered pencil shaving, black currant, blackberry, cherry, chocolate, leather, tobacco, cedar wood and some brett on the nose. On the palate the wine showed graphite, sweet fruit, black currant, blackberry, cherry, bell pepper, leather, tobacco, some chocolate and some brett, paired with medium-plus acidity, medium-plus tannin and very good length. The broad, dense, sweet, medium-bodied wine was very balanced. A very good Bordeaux, though certainly not the best value. Drink now and over the next ten years.

Too young to be drinking without long decant. Was not showing much beauty or perfume tonight. I will wait until 2016 before trying again. I believe the large 14% Petite Verdot makes this wine unlike many other vintages of Pichon Lalande. The style is different.

This remains my favorite Chateau, though Angelus will give it a good run for the money when it comes to my absolute preference. Hard to believe that 2001 was considered an "off" or "sleeper" of a year. This is a fantastic, textbook Lalande. The nose wafts of briar, black cherry, cassis, menthol, tar, and pencil. As for the palate - imagine being stuck in a briar patch (without the thorns of course) and having your friends hurling black and red cherries at you, all while taking notes with a No. 2 pencil! That is where the palate takes you. Major briar, major fruit, and major pencil. This was such an enjoyable bottle of wine and I am convinced there there is room to grow. Beautiful balance with sorted tannin, this will continue to gain in complexity. Enjoy it now, but enjoy it even more in 5 to 10 years. Highly recommended for seeking out at a good price. 95+ Pts

On initial openning - very nice dark fruits on the nose and palette. Still tannic. Very abit of heat. Medium body. After 3 hours decant - More austere than Lynch Bages 2001. But interesting. Very much a Pauillac. Needs another at least 5 years. NOse - 92. Palette - 93.

Bright garnet color. Smelled of caramel and blueberries, intoxicating scent. Tasted of classic tobacco, cedar, dark berries. Fine tannins. Still young, and needs more time, but outstanding now nonetheless. Reminds me of why I love Bordeaux in classic years and why I am glad that the hype-market misses years like 2001.

Medium ruby color, medium intensity on the nose with notes of tobacco leaf, black fruit and some herbaceousness (including the characteristic green pepper note, which I don't mind at all). Some oak on the palate though its becoming reasonably well integrated, medium acidity, medium body and medium plus alcohol. All of which means its open for business, doesn't have the power of more fruit forward vintages but is entirely ready to go and while it needs a little time in a decanter, it shouldn't disappoint. My better half, the Sangiovese Queen, loved it, which gives some sense of where it fits on the acid/green versus big fruit scale. As a pairing, a nice juicy steak does the job brilliantly.

Not an enjoyable wine. I found this bottle to be sour and very tannic. We drank this side by side with an '07 Franciscan Cab ($19) and all thought the Franciscan was the MUCH better wine...not sure who has it wrong here, me or the pros.
Served from decanter. There is a beauty in "unheralded Bordeaux vintages" - they are easy on the wallet and one doesn't have to wait 'til his death bed to enjoy them. Medium body, bright garnet color, with full Pauillac pedigree. Bravo on many levels, despite that having 2002 Pichon Baron side by side , I chose 2002 Pichon Baron.

The first of a half-case in honor of my daughter's 10th birthday, as others have said this is just entering its prime. Staunch cherry, currant, forest and graphite upon opening, then left open in the cellar (but not decanted) for 2 hours before pairing with grilled top sirloin steaks. This had not changed too much, showing very youthful. Not yet very velvety, but with well-integrating tannins and chewy fruit, oak, and graphite. Medium-full bodied with a youthful short finish, this was very, very nice, and is only going to get (much) better in the next 10 years. This is going to be fun to periodically experience in concert with my daughter's significant early experiences in life!

Goedhuis Pichon Lalande Tasting & Dinner (Hibiscus Restaurant, London): Very clean nose. Wine is fully resolved but only at the start of its drinking life. Beautiful fruit, including peaches as Thomas Do Chi Nam suggests. Delicious. Long. Satisfying. Curiously persistent. Initially seems not particularly long, but it is. It lingers and grows. More tears on the sides of the glass than with the 2003 or the 2006 -- but the alcohol is not obvious on the nose or the palate. [Thomas: A great vintage, a forgotten vintage. 14% Petit Verdot (unusually high for Pichon Lalande), 50% Cab Sauv, 36% Merlot. "Flowers, peaches, violets."]

Decanted 1 hour, Dark bright red color still looks like a young wine, complex nose a hint of pencil lead but definitely smells like a Pauillac. Tannins are still up front but maybe starting to smooth. I think 5 to 8 more years and this should peak. A very solid wine Enjoyable now but still more to give

Great bordeaux. The nose was a mix of ripe berries, oak, cassis, and leather. A taste brought a smooth, chocolate covered cherry kind of ripeness. The wine had a long, lingering finish that carrried well. I recommend this wine.

A very solid wine, but drunk too young. Nice to visit it within the context of the older wines in the vertical (66, 70, 89) but has a long way to go. Still locked up tight even after a splash decant and double back into the bottle before taking it to the restaurant. Lalande's pedigree was on display though, will be interesting to see how the primary fruit changes over the coming decade or so.

2001 Bordeaux (Lavandou): A beautiful feminine bouquet of lilacs and lavender. This wine benefited tremendously from double decanting (everything else was popped and poured iirc) as it opened somewhat burly and monolithic in masculine Pauillac form. It is quintessential Pichon Lalande; while inviting and pleasant, it still shows great breed and potential for the future. The mouthfeel is silky and elegant but the fruit is still hollow in pitch; having tasted older iterations, I feel confident that with time the palate will add density and richness.

What is there to say about this wine that has not already been said. Definitely an overlooked vintage, maybe because of its more approachable style and soft tannins, but what concentration and focus! Decanted 1 hour (maybe needed much more) Already developing a bouquet that sings with brambly blackberry, plum, licorice, dark chocolate, and a gamey, smoked meat essence. As the wine sits the nose constantly evolves and will show herbal elements and a definitive charcoal, graphite component as well as some cedar and tobacco that never interrupts or overwhelmes the warm fruit and roasted meat notes. The palate is a different animal entirely with tons of gamey bacon notes, some burnt cedar and forest floor set agains a backdrop of blackberries and currants that go all day long on the finish. Nice, medium body with very, very silky and resloved tannins and a nice, bright acidity. This one didn't throw much tannin influenced sediment but did see some clear tartrate crystals (a testament to a nice acidic backbone). This will probably get better with 5-10 years on its side and remain worthy of roasted lamb for another ten thereafter. This is why i love Bordeaux, no, this is why I love wine!

Opened, decanted and consumed over 3 hours at a restaurant. Drunk alongside 96 Haut Brion, 95 Lynch Bages, 97 Yalumba Octavius. Surprisingly approachable. Dark ruby red, clear and youthful in colour. Nose of chalk, red fruits and some tobacco/earthy notes. Palate an elegant and well integrated blend of youthful fruit, dominated by cherry, prune and blackberry, and early secondary notes of cigar and some mushroomy/truffly characters. Tight, long finish with beautifully fine and integrated tannins. A pleasure, but will certainly improve with another 5-7 years.

The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound. A fairly dark purple core, turning to ruby at the rim. Impressive aromatics, offering up notes of dark fruit (blackberries and cassis), lilly, tapendae and a hint of truffle. Medium-bodied, with good grip, ripe fruit and a lengthy finish. Missing a bit of focus / delineation when compared to the 2000.

Opened bottle, ~ 2 hrs before drinking, and am glad I did. Enjoyable nose with dark fruit and toast being dominant and hits of leather, cedar, and oak noticable. The expected blackberry/plum style dark fruit is present from the beginning and lasts as the tannic structure becomes more evident before fading away. The cedar and toast on the nose makes an appearance as well. The evolution is smooth and well integrated. As the structure and fruit die off, a faint sweet component makes an appearance as the finish carries on for a good length of time. A few times I thought it was done only to have a new sensation rise. Very enjoyable.

Big green peppers and horsey-ness on the nose. A confusion of very wild animal notes bordering on cat's pee and cabbage greeness. There is also an underlying floral nose of violets. The palate is suprisingly black fruit driven with good structure and spice notes of nutmeg.

Classic Pauillac nose of pencil lead and bell pepper. Soft tannins, weighty mid-palate, and admirable finish. A much improved wine from 3 years ago when last tasted. Recommended. B

My best bottle of PL 01 so far. Dense classic pauillac comes in deep ruby red. Keep changing and developing all night. Cedar, leather, red fruits, cassis. Big, full bodied with big finish

Very good, started with vegetable notes, a touch sharp/hard with tannin, but not a lot of structure. As the meal (steak) progressed, the wine softened markedly, and showed nice fruit and a lovely silkiness. Surprisingly, the wine also complemented the whipped parsnips. Half the bottle reserved for tomorrow night to see how it evolves.

Pichon-Lalande Vertical (Harry's Steak): Oak slut. Spackled with barrel char from top to bottom, and so richly fruited that the structure feels like it ain't there. Pichon-Lalande? Say it ain't so!

This is a good bottle of wine that is drinking well at this point and probably will not be a long-term ager. It has a more earthy profile than I find typical for Lalande but still manages to preserve the elegance and finese that we expect from this house. It has tobacco and peppar on the nose. It tastes of dark, somewhat lean black fruit on the palate. I find little tannin in the finish. If you do drink this I would decant it as the mid-section did put on weight in the glass and it did begin to develop some of the savorines that this wine is known for in other vintages.

Somewhat disappointing. Tainted bottle?. Decanted 3 hours, spices, pepper, dark berries, earth on the nose. Rather soft on the palate, with intrusive oak. Overall, rather disjointed. Was WOTN for some in our gourmet group.

Dense ruby in color with aromas of flowers, cassis, pepper, and cedar. Medium bodied with a rather velvety texture. A bold wine yet possesses a fruity character including flavors of berries, dried dark fruits, and tobacco. The finish is long with lingering fruit. Drink or hold.

Nice nose of cedar and cassis. Strong tasting at this point, with lots of currants and plums. The wine is light on the palate with a good amount of acidilty and tart flavors. The petite verdot stood out, and not in a good way. This component seems out of balance with the rest of the flavors, and to me resulted in an awkward tasting wine. I hope it integrates better as the wine ages.

Popped and poured. No decant, no breathing time. Drank with 5 other people so no time to linger. Light on the nose and the palate. Tannin not real obvious, but fruit is masked by tannin. Will hold second bottle for 5 years, if I can.

Great nose of tobacco, cedar and black fruit. Still quite tannic and youthful but not as fruity as I expected it to be. Found it masculine and tough. Perhaps it was somehow muted for now. Should wait at least a couple of years to drink it.

The 2001 vintage is starting to open up now although still closed enough for me to wait another couple of years. There is a reasonable amount of black fruits - cassis, black cherry and some undergrowth.
The wine is well balanced with decent acidity that will ensure that this lasts a few years yet.

2001 Bordeaux (Virginia): Part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting - pardon the short TN... Large scaled. Lots of tannin, though seemingly well-balanced. Spicy oak. Coffee in with the black fruit. One of the better wines of the tasting, IMO. However, I thought the '01 Lynch-Bages and Pontet Canet were right up there with it, for significantly less $$.... Hmmm.

Tasted from a 375ml -- This seemed to have no flavor at all. The nose was muted, and had some lead pencil, some fruit. The wine was medium bodied and seemed to have no flavor at all. After leaving it in the glasses for two hours there was finally some flavor coming out, but this still seemed very muted and not at all smooth or "together".

STG Does 2001 Bordeaux (Susan's house): The nose showed soy and some hints of green. The palate was sweet and lush (seems to be a hallmark of the vintage) with good balance. I especially liked the dry rub BBQ spice element on the palate. The slight greenness on the nose pops up again on the finish.

Not decanted consumed over a period of 4 hours. Deep plum color with a clear rim in the glass. Upon opening a nose of dark fruits and a slight earth note, the palate followed the nose with some tannin noticeable in the finish. I decided not to decant based on this small taste, re-cork back in the cellar.
With the meal this wine was quite a surprise. I had opened the bottle 2 hours prior and drained off a couple of ounces, we found the wine quite approachable. The nose had only opened slightly adding a trace of cedar to the fruit and earth, the fruit was more in the lighter spectrum. However, the very fine tannin. when first opened. had gone missing. The finish was pleasant enough but a tad short. The balance was quite good, the wine quite elegant.
Four hours later, finishing the bottle up, the acid came more to the forefront. The nose remained within the same realm all evening, the finish lengthened and ended with a pleasant spice note.
I think I will have to make another trip to the store and grab a few to put away.

Very good.

(RP 93)

Nose: black and red currants, cigar box, smoke, graphite
Palate: rich, tight and round tannins, medium body, Casssis, some vanilla, complex, elegant yet muscular at the same time, unobtrusive but noticeable acidity, yet harmonious and balanced, more rustic and rough, could be in 10 or 15 years but still harmonious, elegant and balanced come out.
Long rough, dry finish with lots of dry tannins and a dash of cigar box and cassis. Can improve next 5+ years by at least 2 Points.

Drinking well now but no rush - lots of life left. Very typical Paulliac, subdued fruit, well integrated, good length. Great match for a rib eye roast.

95+ Pts

A flight of bord 01s and others: Exotic nose of leather, cat's pee, some fishyness. Exotic on the palate as well with spices, succulent fruits and some bitter root on the finish. A bit underwhelming compared to another bottle of the same vintage that I had but maybe I was ex[ected tp be blown away again. To be fair , this bottle was tasted straight out fromt he bottle withouth much decanting.

tobacco, tar, plum and earthy tones. Very young wine that has balanced out nicely and come together but has many more years to hit a good stride.

Classic Bordeaux in every sense of the word -- cedar, smoked meat, black fruit and a 45-second finish. This is a beautiful wine tht is drinking beautifully now, but promises to age effortlessly for 20 more years (if you can wait that long).
