Friday, February 4, 2022 - Wonderful example of the late de Lencquesaing-era Comtesse, a historic period for the chateau. It's not far behind the 2000 - more reserved in personality compared to the dazzling fireworks display the 2000 puts on, but not any lighter in material. The old vine petit verdot abolished by the current management makes up 14% of the blend here, which if not the highest ever must be somewhere up there, and it makes its presence felt with a sapid spine that starts out making the wine quite taut but it loosens up as it airs out and warms up. The fruit has both red and black elements and doesn't taste remotely advanced enough to be 21 years past harvest, which is confounding my designs to drink more recent vintages at full maturity and thus frankly a little depressing to me. But it's still developed nicely considering it was all oak as of my last note on it but now there's barely any sign of wood at all. And it can still be had at a friendly tab - I'll be on the lookout for more.
