2001 Château Climens

Community Tasting Note

Unlike the "big" maturer (albeit with time on its side) Rieussec '01 that preceded it, my overwhelming impression here was of spritely lightweight youth. I have no idea where this will go - is it a 90/91pt disappointment as is or a 95?+ pointer in waiting? Time will tell.
Either way, the proof will out from, say, 2026 onwards.

7/4/2023 7:43:00 AM - Nice notes.....for what it is worth, Rieussec is a Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blend, and Climens is 100% Semillon. Climens is known for its lighter style and elegance, and is likely second (only to Yquem) for taste and consistency (although I find Rieussec to be very close in consistency). Of course, you have years where some producers knock it out of the park, such as Rieussec and Suduiraut in 2001. I love Climens (not as much as Yquem, who also uses a Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blend), but they are probably my second favorite Sauternes/Barsac wine! Their wines will age gracefully for decades. Hope you have more bottles!

Thanks for your comment. Sadly I have no 2001 Climens (someone else brought it to the BYOB lunch). I do have 2001 Rieussec and Lafaurie-Peyraguey though - and they will go on for a long time!
