Wednesday, October 12, 2011 - First Hungarian/Tokaji/Furmint varietal wine tasted. Served at refrigerator temp (40's F). Light gold color with initially restrained nose of apple fruit. Somewhat round in mid palate. On warming up closer to 50'ish there was a lot more going on; nose and palate really opened up and revealed a lot of honey notes. Deceptive since this is very dry wine, but so well balanced that the fruit managed to assert itself. Low alcohol (12.5% listed) probably helps to give this greater balance. Perhaps the first fuller bodied, truly dry, low-alcohol white I've had. Moderate-strong acidity on the finish with moderate minerality. Reminds me a bit of an imaginary blend of riesling and rkatstiteli but more full bodied. And describing as an imaginary blend doesn't do justice to the character of this wine. It's very distinctive. Good appertif wine but even better with chicken stew, cheddar cheese topped with sliced dried date bars. Ready to drink now but even though this is already has several years of bottle age it could probably stand more. Serious producer and serious wine. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

*Rated VG (Very good)
