  • 2007 Királyudvar Furmint Tokaji Sec

First Hungarian/Tokaji/Furmint varietal wine tasted. Served at refrigerator temp (40's F). Light gold color with initially restrained nose of apple fruit. Somewhat round in mid palate. On warming up closer to 50'ish there was a lot more going on; nose and palate really opened up and revealed a lot of honey notes. Deceptive since this is very dry wine, but so well balanced that the fruit managed to assert itself. Low alcohol (12.5% listed) probably helps to give this greater balance. Perhaps the first fuller bodied, truly dry, low-alcohol white I've had. Moderate-strong acidity on the finish with moderate minerality. Reminds me a bit of an imaginary blend of riesling and rkatstiteli but more full bodied. And describing as an imaginary blend doesn't do justice to the character of this wine. It's very distinctive. Good appertif wine but even better with chicken stew, cheddar cheese topped with sliced dried date bars. Ready to drink now but even though this is already has several years of bottle age it could probably stand more. Serious producer and serious wine. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

    *Rated VG (Very good)

  • 2008 Bodega Maranones Vinos de Madrid Treintamil Maravedíes

A very polished expression of garnacha. Shows restraint with the use of new oak allowing the peppery brambly grenache character to show through. Red fruit with great moderate food-friendly acidity. The balance is really key with this wine; it comes across as very finessed. I'd also say there's some syrah in this too from the darker berry flavors. This easily beats many Rhone wines at $20-$30 and I got it for $18. Ready to drink now, but could probably handle a couple years of age too. I'm getting more and drinking in the short term. Could not believe the listed 14.5% alcohol. This wine carries it as light as a feather.

  • 2010 Giuseppe Apicella Colli di Salerno IGT

My first piedirosso, and what a surprise. Drinks like nothing I've had before. The varietal is not given much shrift by wine experts, but here goes. . . .
First off, it's a very light- bodied red. The nose is a bit peppery, a bit floral. On the palate the wine is slightly tannic and a little rustic. The floral quality comes up again but there's also a medium savoriness. That and the acidity at the finish, which comes off as almost tart but to my taste is moderate and makes this a wine I keep wanting to go back to and sip again and again. Still, I managed to hold off and drink this over three consecutive nights. I wouldn't pair this with any rich meat dishes, but it was great with a variety of food over three nights. Salmon, salumi, green salad with tomatoes, a pizza slice with (of all things) arugula, cherry tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, and shaved parmesan slices--and in my experience vinegar is usually a wine killer. Has some of the versatility of lighter reds such as a light chianti or even gamay, but I wouldn't characterize it as similar to these other two reds. A big part of the reason for my score is the price, which was $13.99. I'm getting a few more from Chambers Street for everyday drinking.
