Monday, January 4, 2021 - Purchased 4 bottles at winebid back in 2012 and this was the second bottle of the 4; held in temperature conrolled storage. Cork in pristine shape and it was apparent based upon the aromas from the pour into the decanter that this is a representative example of a properly stored bottle. An hour later my first sips left me impressed as this is a 2004 that is showing cherry like and other dark fruit flavors combined with savory earthy flavors. Acid was in proper balance, and the tannins were mostly dissapated after the decant. No noticeable touch of oak which is typically a concern that I have with Pape. My first sips left me quite impressed as there was enough fruit in general that this Bordeaux did not cry out immediately for food or cheese. Paired well with the main course of a (Philly) garlic roll cheesesteak wit fried onions from Santuccis. (Perhaps this is shocking, but I have found that Bordeaux pairs incredibly well with the higher quality Philly cheasesteaks, which means not Pat's or Geno's.) No tertiary components were evident in this bottle as it's clearly at the top range of the bell curve of drinakability. I agree with others who think the wine will be its best up through 2022 or 2023, although it certainly will drinkwell beyond that time period but showing more tertiary components which I tend to appreciate in Pessacs. I you enjoy Pessacs I think it's a smart buy if you can pick up any properly stored bottles for up to $100.
