Saturday, May 9, 2020 - Mother's day eve wine and isolation open that bottle wine combined. Decanted for about an hour. Quite a bit of sludge in the bottom of the bottle. Nice and deep ruby red heart transitioning to more garnet at the rim. Some bottle funk when initially decanted. That quickly blew off to reveal a rarefied melange of pencil lead, tobacco and cigar box notes overlying shy black currant and blue plums in the middle and then a more feral and earthy base note comprised of dried mushroom, loam, spice and caramelized beef. So many elements to the bouquet that blend seamlessly together over many, many layers and beckon you to delve deeper to tease them apart and discover more scents! It smells so amazing, I'm almost afraid to taste it! Much younger tasting than I would have expected. Brisk acidity, medium bodied, fine tannins and a dry, but not too dry, finish. The flavours are more in the dried red fruit spectrum. Dried strawberry, cherry and cranberry interwoven with pencil shavings, spice and strong tea. With food (rack of lamb) the flavour transforms into more purple and black fruits and the body fills out more. It really comes together then! Smooth, but with underlying tannins and acid to provide classic structure. Right at the end there is just the slightest hint of a green bark note that freshens it up. Stellar!
