Perfectly mature, nose of rose, cedar and red berry. Rich palate - dark cherry, more plush than expected, rich tasty spices. Definitely more modern in style but very good!

Very modern nose. You can feel the barrique on this more than I can recall. Some tertiaries are popping, there's leather, tobacco and cigar box. Spicy and tannic. The fruit is fading. It feels rustic. This may be over the curve at this point. Decant, decant, decant & drink up.

The nose smells oxidized and of stewed fruit. Clearly over the hill and mushroomy. This is my last bottle. Judging from some recent reviews on here, this may be a bad bottle. My review of the 2008 from 2 years ago stated it was oxidized/stewy at first, but blew off. 78??
Beautiful Barolo that is mature and near peak. Some bricking around a watery edge but the color and fruit deepens nicely with an hour of air. Silky with lighter body (typical IMO for a Barolo at 17 yrs old). It balances pretty well with air but acidity still stays a nose ahead.Fine tannins. Very subtle complexity with some tobacco. Medium length finish.

This is a bottle that has really paid many times the many years I have laid it down. It is now fully mature, textbook example of a classic Barolo. Relatively light in color with the classic tar and roses aroma. On the palate it really does deserve that much overused adjective velvety. There are still some tannins but they are marvelously smooth and the overall impression is one of the wine that goes down very easy. Intensity of flavors a good, not overwhelming, and the finish is long and satisfying. I won't go in to a ridiculous list of all the various flavors that the wine conjures up except that to say that they are many, fascinating, and ultimately all boil down to the essence of Barolo. This wine is at its peak I will happily stay there for another few years, but there's no reason not to drink it now.

Barolo made in a modern way with NO sediment after 14 years. Dark and densely fruited. Still quite tannic though very drinkable. I'm putting my money (and remaining 2 bottles) on further refinement in another 2-3 years. This may have shown more with a longer decant than the 2 hours it got.

Beginning to oxidize which blew off but not as good as the last bottle 2 years ago. Time to finish off and remove fromcellar inventory while still drinkable

This was the first of four bottles purchased on release. It was decanted for 3 hours leaving a substantial solid deposit in the bottle. The color was as expected; medium density, garnet hue, and noticeable bricking at the edge. The aromatics were surprisingly strong with the earth notes more prominent than the restrained red fruits. Surprisingly, the roses and tar that I thought would be in the forefront were barely detectable on first pour but emerged during the next 90 minutes. Despite the 14.5 ABV, the alcohol was not obtrusive in the finish or on the nose. In the mouth, this comes off very solid and muscular. Sour cherry was prominent with strawberry, licorice, orange rind, tobacco leaf, earth notes, and a hint of creosote in the background. Quite enjoyable now, there is nice complexity that should continue to add definition with time. The balance is superb and the length was impressive. The tannins were quite evident at the end but not harsh or coarse. This wine is well structured and should benefit from another year or two of cellar time. In retrospect, I would have given this more air time in the decanter. AeR Seghesio Barolo is generally considered to be more modern but this 2001 is a very solid and impressive effort………..definitely not for the “faint of heart”.
Served with fusilli and a red Porcini sauce followed by a selection of Vermont cheeses. A Sicilian salad of orange slices, fennel, oil cured olives, and red onion with a drizzle of olive oil and Balsamic was the end cap for the meal.
Audozed for 5 hours. This is still in its infancy. It's drinkable. Quite drinkable actually. But next to the '96, it is a baby. Most notes are still primary. And although there's rose petals, a ton of fruit and tannin is under control, this has lots of essence to further develop. Can't wait to re-taste in a year or two.

Perfect timing to drink. Big nose with earthy pleasant aromas. The mouth has complex flavors of cedar, leather, chocolate and currents with soft velvety tannins that continued to develop in the glass over the next 30 minutes. A long finish.

OMG! Insanely good. Beyond my expectations. (especially after reading the last review) The nose on this is powerful. You do not have to stick your nose in the glass to actually smell it. There's a point in wine's life when 50% of the primary & secondary notes turn into tertiary notes. This is the first time I open a bottle at this perfect stage. The balance between these 3 aroma stages is just perplexing. It smells so good I am hesitant to drink it. But, on the palate the same balance is found. Wet forest floor, dark fruits intermingled with red cherry, currants and other berries, leather, sweet tobacco, cedar box... with a rustic finesse on the nose and rounded & elegant on the palate. Finish is long, at least 30 seconds. Wow! Really impressed. Definitely WOTN. No, actually WOTM!

Agree with the 86. Sure see elements that current reviews are noticing but this bottle disappointed. Bottle variation? Good cork and cellar kept. Really showing age.

Decanted for one hour. Dark, ruddy ruby colour; almost opaque at the core. Very pretty nose of mixed berry jam, worn saddle leather, truffle, dried roses. Medium-full bodied with nicely integrated tannins and replays from the nose joined by dried cherries. 30-35s finish. This bottle was much better than the last. Drink now-2020. 92 points.

Light, ruddy ruby colour with orange flecks and bricking to the rim. Aromas of leather, dried orange peel, earth, dried rose petals, porcini mushrooms, dried cherries, and a hint of tar. Medium-bodied with more dried cherries and mushrooms joined by tobacco notes through to a moderate-length finish, ~30s. Tannins are integrating nicely, but still have a way to go. Not sure if this wine will improve much more, so consume over the next five-to-eight years. Drink now-2020.

Holy balls is this good. Seems to be a rather modern style which is normally a negative for me, but this is just so well done. Tar, thick and unctuous without feeling too heavy, plums and berries. Lots of tannins. The finish goes on and on. God damn, I like it.

I seem to have a preference for medium- to short-term aged Barolos because this was in a perfect place for me, showing tannic backbone but in a structured manner, giving a rustic but smooth core to the wine, with aromas of roses, sweet tobacco, charred cherries and flavors of deep roasted cherry and tar on the finish.

I have to disagree w/ the others. Maybe I bought some off bottles, but this has yet to do it for me. Great aromatics, but the fruit seems a bit tired and encumbered by the tannins. It's varietally correct, it comes with a sense of place, but it's not what i'd expect from this house in a strong vintage. 86

Right out of the bottle, this wine was singing. Drank at restaurant, wonderful nose upon opening with floral, leather and black cherry notes. On the palate, a great combination of fruit and earth with a finish that lasted a minute. This wine is really in a great spot right now.

A terrific barolo with a huge fruit core, high alcohol, and firm integrated tannins. Finish goes on and on. This is just starting to show and should be aged close to 5 years longer to reach its full potential.

Intense dark ruby colour. Aromas of cherry, plum, tar, spice, licorice. Medium-full bodied, tannic, with violets, cherry, spice, tar, licorice, and a hint of cocoa. Moderate-long finish, ~40s, with cherry, plums, and spice. Needs 5+ years. 91+ points.
