Not a bad Saturday afternoon: I wasn’t sure what to expect from an 18 year old federspiel, but what we got was a thing of beauty. Apricots and slate with a touch of petrol and a tangy finish, it combines richness and precision well and is hard to stop drinking.

Bronze/gold in the glass; slightly oxidative on the nose, with a note that reminds me of biscuit.
Light-bodied and fairly dry on the palate, with persistence on the finish. Sweet & sour white fruits. Nice, but more interesting than delicious. This might be my last bottle of this, and it's not bad for a 15 year old wine from what has proven to be a so-so vintage in the Wachau.
Healthy light color for 10 year old Riesling. A nose of ripe peach and guava does not prepare you for a completely dry wine with a rush of minerality at the end. Weight seems fuller than Federspiel but lighter than Smaragd. Terrific, youthful wine.

Light yellow. Before transforming into a more typical Riesling, this wine reminded me of the light, mineral nature of Muscadet, the salinity of Chablis, and the slightly waxy side of Semillon or Savennieres. All the while, it was searingly dry with great minerality and mouth watering acidity. Only toward the end did floral and mature Riesling petrol notes come to the fore. An exceptionally interesting chameleon of a wine.

A knockout. Like drinking rocks soaked in lavender and a hint of honey, it typifies the intense minerality that has made me such a fan of Austrian whites. Wonderfully pure and crunchy, it builds from the attack into a long, complex, intensely mineral finish.
