2003 ALVARO PALACIOS LES TERRASSES CATALUNYA PRIORAT-made from Carignan [Mazuelo and Cariñena] which outside of Catalunya is mostly used as a blending grape to add colour and weight; this was really fruity with bright and expressive flavours of plum, blackberry and red and black cherry; it was very tasty and had enough acidity to carry it for the long run.

Weekly tasting group #094; Priorat (@ BS): The bouquet is a bit rustic with red fruits, earth and spiciness. On the palate still a lot of juicy cherries, herbs, fresh acidity and ripe and round but firm tannin. A bit drying in the finish. Lovely wine, ready now and no real hurry.

This wine really evolved over time, starting with a little funk, pepper and leather and slowly showing more depth and intrigue. It still has some fruit, but the secondary flavors are more apparent, with mineral and savory notes. Drink now.

Black berry fruits, earth, leather, chocolate in both the bouquet as well as the taste. Pleasant acidity, soft tannin with still a good bite. The wine is ready now and will stay on this level for some years; at least until 2015.
Nice ruby red color with a nose of earth and dried fruit. Silky mouthfeel with mellow tanins; leather and red fruit on the palate. Great wine for pairing with a hearty meal.

Goon Wine (NoPo): The nose is dark, complex, and reminds me of a dessert plate. It's showing blueberries and gooseberries placed alongside some Mexican chocolate and served with a glass of milk to keep things smooth. Leather and blueberries show prominently on the palate with the fruit rising up to deliver fully on the mid palate. The structure lays low early, and rises up later as the fruit begins to wind down. The tannins dry fully, and while they toe the line, they never get too big to be troublesome.

Smells delicious! Slightly floral but with strong black fruit and tar, and a bit of cookie dough. The palate is full-on with plums, blackberry pie, tar. Good firm tannins and acidity still that do their job but don't disrupt the flavors as they move through into the finish. Drying, but the length of the fruit sticks around. Nice stuff!

Decanted for an hour before drinking. Earthy/mossy on the nose, with leather and oak. Supple tannins, well balanced. Medium finish. We paired it with a chicken sausage/shallots/garlic red sauce over penne pasta. Great meal on a cold night!

Deep ruby color, with just a touch of bricking at the edge. A nice earthy and mineral edge to the raspberry and cherry fruit, with licorice, flowers, dried herbs, and vanilla on the nose. Medium to full body with ripe, integrated tannins and very nice acidity. A touch of oak adds some complexity on the palate. Nice, lengthy finish with the spicy oak and earthiness leading the way. The fruit is going into the background and the secondary elements are taking over the palate and finish. In this case, that is not totally a good thing. In my opinion, this needs to be drank before more fruit disappears, but for now it is drinking very nicely.

Just loved this one. Medium ruby, at first the smell is very spicy, with kirsch liqueur and that wonderful mineral earthiness (pencil lead) and smokiness remisnescent of bordeaux. Then the nose opens up to more floral and moss-like aromas. On the palate, the wine medium-bodied with fresh acidity and soft tannins, pleasantly fragrant and spicy body with plenty of cherry flavors. The nice finale is medium-length. Overall, a wonderfully mature wine that shows a spanish mix of bordeaux and châteauneuf-du-pape. Impressive for the price.

This has really come into its own with cellar time. Nice old world character - new leather, graphite and subtle red fruit notes on the nose. Similar on the palate with almost a cherry compote like flavor. This is a very enjoyable wine - I can only find fault in its short finish.

Definite grenache (garanacha) nose of cherries with floral components and oak. Cherry notes, moderate tannin, vanilla. I cannot see this going upwards. I think it should be consumed within two years. Consumed with risotto and chicken breasts finished with black truffle salt. I think the earthiness and old world components of this wine worked well the wine.

Avoid drinking this immediately after opening. This wine goes through a very dominating sweet phase before the oxygen really starts to invigorate the structure. Tannin DOES emerge--can't stress that enough. I didn't believe this was a possibility at first, but it did show up, and the overt candied Grenache notes subsided, revealing robust front-end notes that only echo the revelations of J. Raynolds: rich raspberry, black cherry and Haribo licorice, all filtered through a structure I scarcely believed was there. If you're not giving this time in the glass--and at least an hour at half-bottle--you're wrong. This started out as grocery store swill: Thunderbird sweet, Maddog musty; but an hour put this in a league of its own, a staggering transformation neither the wife nor I suspected. This is Priorat: Powerful, rich, deep, and surprisingly supple. A wine whose 14% abv snuck up on us, and whose finish is deceptively long. Highly recommended at 20 Euro.

Deep ruby to purple color. A nice nose with raspberries, cherries, licorice and a bit of dried herbs. Medium to full body with solid, ripe tannins and good acidity. Raspberries, cherries, licorice and oak on the palate. Long finish with cherries and raspberries with a bit too much oak. Tastes very good now, but another year in the cellar should help soften the tannins a bit and hopefully help integrate the oak on the finish.

Decanted in glass about and hour after initial taste. Settled down in glass. Beautiful dark ruby color. Black Cherry, licorice and cocoa on nose. Medium body. On tasting, not as much fruit as in aroma usually found in this grape variety. Good balance. Fine tannins. Wonderful sour black cherry finish that lingered. I'm glad I have another bottle to drink in a couple of years.

I wasn't impressed by the 2002, so I wasn't expecting much here. But it convinced me immediately that it was something different. A very floral, perfumy nose, also bringing berries, currants, and an earthy minerality. The mouth is loaded with dense, complex flavors, fine tannins, and a rich, lingering finish. Opened for one hour, not much progression so splash decanted for 2 more hrs. Beautiful deep translucent ruby. Stewed red fruits, coffee, herbs, tar. Overall a well made wine, nicely balanced but lacking in charm or typicity. You drink it because it's there, not because something about it lures you back to your glass. Maybe it will evolve dramatically but it didn't have a lot of fruit to show or much character, but I wouldn't call it closed, just boring. For a wine with a lot of Grenacha in it I would have expected different fruit characteristics... Basically the same quality but less easy drinking as the Las Rocas VV Grenacha, and two and a half times the price.
