Much better than the last bottle. Nose of jammy blueberry, cassis, mocha and provencal olives. Very dense. No signs of oxidation as in last bottle. Full bodied, velvety tannins. Drink now. This is at it's peak.

Interesting. I'm not sure if this bottle has aged all that well. I'm not usually drinking 6yr old St. Josephs. Seems a bit oxidized. Little fruit... just hints of some black cherry fruit. Almost like a kalamata olive concentrate on nose and palate. Med body, lower acidity. My description seems horrible, but I did enjoy it (I like kalamata olives :)

nose: classic northern rhone tones of black olives, bacon fat, smoke, red and black cherries, and some slight hints of red florals. Shows off the vintage with the brighter fruits, but still very northern rhone. Medium depth and was essentially a pop n pour
taste: good medium feel with red and black cherries, bacon fat, smoke, and some hints of smoked game. Medium depth, this is well in place
overall: right in the pocket, this is very enjoyable and a great buy for ~20. Not the most amazing Saint Joseph I've ever had, but very enjoyable and gave me everything I wanted

Kermit Lynch Wine dinner: Bistro Laurent (Paso Robles, CA): Notes of olives, olives, and more olives. Very distinctive, gamey note, with wild herbs, bacon, and a hint of smoke. Not a bad wine, but it needed some time to open up (and to see if there were any more subtle flavors under the olives). Paired with sautéed filet of "John Dory".

Quite open aromatically, with penetrating aromas of grilled meat, charcoal, and dark fruit. On the palate, it's medium bodied, with more of everything found on the nose - smoked meats, ash and dusty black / red fruit. Some tannic / acid grip, but, overall, nicely balanced - in a young, rustic Northern Rhone sort of way... A serious value at $22.60, after discount. Blind, I probably would have been thinking Cote-Rotie.

$22.60 retail, after discount. Real wine here. One whiff tells you this is Syrah from somewhere in the Northern Rhone. Though concentrated - courtesy of the 2003 sun - I see nothing atypical or in any way over-ripe here. Good tannic grip lies beneath a fairly dense core of dark fruit, tobacco, meat and spice. Good detail and balance on the palate of this young wine. Again, this is a terrific value, IMO.

$22.60 retail, after discount. This is a serious St. Joseph. The '03 Faury has a raw, gutsy quality that grabs you by the shirt collar and shakes you. Full bodied and more earthy than fruity. Dominated by tobacco, leather and barnyard. Note: I decanted half the bottle into two 6 oz screw capped bottles, filled to the top, and a week later this wine was even better - more expressive, and showing a bit more fruit and much less horsiness / stink. Next time I will decant to give this wine more air up front...

Blueberries, cassis, espresso roast, some anise on the intense, satisfying nose. Loads of acidity on the entry, followed by fruit and body rich enough to mask the smooth yet still significant tannins. Drinking very well now; a nice value at around $20.
