  • Still strong struck matches but it blew off the offensive whiff faster than last time. This wine is one of my favorite Kabinetts of this decade. Shows restraint from fermenting to a lower alcohol level so the RS meets the high acid instead of throwing in alka seltzer to de-acidify like most others did. The results are great. Upright and chiseled like marble. I actually really like the sulphur that lingers with the freshness.

  • Pretty stunning surprise here. Essence of the varietal - while not an especially complex example - the purity and the clarity of the individual qualities shine through. Drink on the warmer side of cold.

Opened night 1 - took a taste, re-corked and put in the fridge.

Night 2: yeah baby- this sings with tight minerality, stone fruits, laced with an acid streak that knits the whole thing together. The mid-weight and smooth viscosity add an elegant mouthfeel. For some reason also get a hint of wet bamboo (?).

Night 3: Still singing but more of a sweet-tart affair as the mineral seems to have backed off. Prefer Day 2.

Couple extra points for the insane QPR - Am kicking myself for drinking all the other bottles years ago, but its all over now.

  • Plenty of sulphur and spritz, as usual from this house. Needed a while to blow off... I should have decanted it. Really firm and classy wine when it got enough air. Far superior to the 2011. Excellent and will have a long life.

  • Flawed bottle? First try at a Kabinett. Hay and some lime on the nose. Very little if any acidity. Very sweet, almost like fruit juice.

  • Electric acidity balanced deftly by a sweet fruit core. Good intensity on the palate with a focused, mineral finish. With air, a slight metallic edge crept in. A good match with home-made Indian food. Excellent QPR.

  • Holy cow this is great stuff, and just the qualities I crave and love in Riesling...amazing bright acid, a chunky mineral core, almost botrytized sweetness with a lightning metallic elegant finish. It's like a German warrior in plate armor shows up on the late midpalate that reminds you "Hey. This is serious." This almost reminds me of my beloved 05 von Beulwitz Kaseler Nies'chen, but more salty minerality arrives with air.

  • Drank well. Lower alcohol and higher sweetness than I would normally associate with the Kabinett. Good fruit and spice. Nice acidity and minerallity.

  • Enticing floral hints on the nose. On the palate, more sweetness than one would expect from a Kabinett (or not considering it's got only 7.5% alcohol), but with enough acidity and minerality to balance it out. Started taming down after about 45 minutes in the decanter, and lost its rougher edges after another 45 minutes. Wonderfully ripe fruit with hints of lime and sweet Meyer lemon. Will hold for 4+ years (with diminishing acidity), but ready to drink as a pop and pour after 15+ minutes.
Update: Still drinking wonderfully four days later, even though the acidity has vanished (so like a lighter Spatlese).

  • Acids on the harsher side, but the sweetness cuts through it a bit. Overall, nice but overshadowed by some others tonight. Probably needs some time.

  • The 2010 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bochenauer Kabinett is just awesome. It did take a day to really show itself. But when it did it was just ridiculously delicious with floral traits, sweet mineral powder, tart tangerine essence. Highly recommended!
