Good fruit. Bright and blackberry. Smooth but firm tannins. Pretty good for $25, but would be a great deal at $15. If I paid full retail I'd be disappointed.

I really wanted this wine to perform better than it did. These wines are made in a hybrid new world-old world style, but the new world won out with this one, perhaps too much so. Oddly, when opened, this wine was indistinguishable from a typical Rhone syrah. Gradually the terroir fell away, and only fruit was left. Somewhat hot (15% alcohol!) but not oppressively so.
This may be my last rhone ranger for awhile.

Memorial Day Wine Party (My House): Big fruit, big structure, big spice, big heat. This was delicious and very enjoyable but the 15.1 alcohol seemed to get away from it a bit. Spice notes towards the back end that seem to be typical of paso robles. Alex said when he tasted this at the winery it was loaded with bacon notes, which were oddly entirely absent.
Smelled some the next morning that had been left in a glass, the smoke was there somewhat but the wine was pretty much dead.

At Hollywood Bowl with the Mike and Patty. Dark, full and rich with a long finish. Keeping the rest in the cellar for a year or two. This wine will get even better.

Oh my goodness. This is a seriously good bottle of wine. Dark inky red in color, matched by a full complex taste. Dark fruit up front followed by lingering spice and wood on the finish. This Paso Robles Syrah can stand up to Syrahs from any other region and hold its own.

Practically opaque! Glorious, dark and tasty. Brooding and yet lovely. This is a full throttle syrah that is ready now, but can also hold on for at least a few years!

Paso Robles, Pre HDR: Barrel Sample - Inky, roasted black fruit, pepper, a touch of brine and cereal. Rich black fruit. Rather tight and coating in the back of the mouth. Could be very nice.

The Rotating Dinners, I.1: California Syrah (Chicago, IL): It's so perfumed it's disgusting. Super-confected. The texture is goopy and thick. Almost nothing to like.

Filling in w/the Friday Brown Bag Group (Rich & Dana's): Opaque. Aromas of spice, black currant, black fruit and more spice. Firm tannins, with flavors of dark fruit, herbs and maybe even a bit of chocolate. Syrah?
