Visita D'Arenberg (Mclaren Vale): Degustazione in azienda. Nota breve. Naso interessante, vegetale di tabacco e sottobosco, ma anche polposo di frutta rossa spezie dolci e grafite. Al palato fresco e piuttosto sapido, con tannini che, se pur arrotondati, si fanno sentire. Buon finale. Anche questa bottiglia mai uscita dalla cantina. In una fase ancora giovanile

Red-ish purple in colour, fragrant nose of flowers and ripe red fruit. On the palette, strawberries, violets and good length. More refined than I expected, given the region. Would probably benefit from around 2 more years or a good decant.

Quite light in colour: faded red rose petals. On the nose, attractive strawberry aroma and a whiff of alcohol. On the palate - oh! acid! That is surprising: not something I've encountered in any d'Arenberg before. A cherry and berry flavour to the sweet juice, and a kick of tannin in there somewhere; but by far the over-riding impression is of acid. Not sure what to make of it, to be honest. At first I thought it might be faulty, but with the right food (lamb, tonight) the acidity is just about held in check. I'm a big fan of this winery, and have enjoyed this wine before, but tonight it's not hanging together, and the acidity verges on overpowering. 14.5%, screwcap.
Old vine, bush grenache that horses were using to nibble on. It yields about a quarter ton an acre. For some reason roasted snake meat comes to mind, in the best possible way, of course. Grenache with tannins. Its pretty darn amazing as it were.

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has medium ruby color, with fading garnet rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium intensity aromas, showing red fruit of strawberry and ripe red cherries, floral notes of violet, mineral notes of earth, sweet spice of cloves. The wine is youthful. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (-) tannin of ripe and well-integrated texture. Medium (+) alcohol, it has medium (+) body, and medium intensity flavors of red fruit such as raspberry and ripe red cherries, mineral notes of earth, sweet spice of cloves, some pungent spice of licorice. The wine has a medium finish. Conclusion: Good quality fruity red from Australia, the wine shows typical Grenache characters and nice, easy-drinking. The nose is reasonably concentrated with fair degree of complexity, with a refreshing palate showing slightly higher than expected acidity for the grape, but not unpleasant. Quite high in alcohol and a bit too warming however, it nevertheless has a decent finish to wrap it up. Ready to drink now and can further develop for another 3-5 years.

Open about an hour. Mild nose. Some berry fruit but a bit flat in front. Bigger acid and tannin on finish. Pleasant, nothing wrong with it, but not a lot going on. I like other D'Arenberg wines in this price range much better.

HdR 2012 - D'Arenberg Tasting: Translucent dark garnet in the glass. Fragrant cherry, new oak, a touch of port-like bottle sweetness, eucalyptus. Ripe sweet cherry fruit. Okay.

Surprisingly nice. Gutsy for a grenache and feels like it will go for a few more years.
