  • Served blind, seemed Bordeaux-like to me and much younger. Grippy black cherry and berry with plenty of fruit and earth on good combination. Not the most complex wine, but easy to enjoy.

  • Lightly brown reddish color.
On the nose and the palate the wine presents itself well and well preserved for a Crianza.
It becomes better and gains volume on being exposed to the air and warming up.
I like it Will probably still hold another 5 to 10 years.

  • Labeled as Crianza. Tasted blind.

Dark, very evolved and almost fully opaque reddish-brown color. Aged, dusty and slightly pungent nose with aromas of dusty attic, some mushroomy tones, a little bit of old wood, light earthy notes, a hint of beef jerky and a touch of chanterelle. The wine is dry, old and quite restrained on the palate with a medium body and somewhat tired and dusty flavors of beef jerky, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of wizened cranberry, light pruney notes, tertiary hints of earth and old leather and a ferrous touch of blood. The overall feel is rather firm and structured, thanks to the high acidity and still moderately grippy tannins. The finish is savory, grippy and quite acid-driven with a long, dry aftertaste of crunchy cranberries, some sweeter notes of dried strawberries, a little bit of earth, light rusty notes of blood and iron, a hint of beef jerky and a touch of dusty attic.

A tired and perhaps also slightly off Rioja that feels like it is slowly gliding downhill. At first people thought the wine might've been corked based on the dusty notes, but when the wine was revealed to be +50 years old, this stance was reconsidered and it was thought it was just bottle funk and the wine would open up with air. However, it didn't really get any better over the course of many hours, coming across just as tired and dusty. So ultimately we didn't come to any conclusion whether the wine was off, past its peak or simply both. However, it was quite impossible to guess anything of the wine due to its rather nondescript, dusty and earthy overall character. Nothing special to write home about. Leaving the wine unrated.

  • Well, for a '70 this is very very fresh and elegant. Almost no sediment, rather good cork, evidently proper storage. Elegant, light fruitiness with some black and a bit of red berries. Not that much tertiary notes as one could have expected. MdMurrieta shows its class here. Could have been more complex, but you cannot always have it all.

  • Dark color, third-ish liquor notes. The palate a bit bombastic now, dark red fruit, med-full body, a bit too 3rd-ish palate. Nice but not as good last time, 89, drink now.

  • Nine 1970 Rioja with a Vega Sicilia ringer. (Il Corso): I'm told that the Etiqueta bottling is at least Reserva level and that the bottling was discontinued after '83 for a more traditional program of Reservas and Grand Reservas. It's a bit one note, but that one note is beautiful, focused and long. I'm a bit stunned by the purity, sweetness and vibrancy of plum and cherry fruit, which is the dominant character of the wine, along with a little bit of spice. It's rich, but not heavy at all. I view it as Burgundian, something Bob takes a mild exception to, because the fruit is so pure and the wine isn't showing the typical Rioja profile of worn wood, citrus, leather, etc. The acidity is high in typical fashion, but it does not come off as that orange peel type. The oak is so integrated, you don't realize it's there, which is also quite unusual for an old school Rioja. Just lovely. Solid A-.

  • @Catit 4-2010. This is only a crianza, good god...
Cork out in two, but ok. Extraordinary nose of plum, sweet cherries, leather, earth.
Phenomenal palate with herbs, plum, mushrooms with med body super long and great acidity still.
The wine is fully evolved but far from dying, drink now although it will probably last 10-20 more years. one to remember. myscore 95.
