This was showing quite nicely, with a little herbal note, good fruit, elegance, nicely perfumed and aromatic with exotic spice. Guessed Vosne 1er. Finally an Ilan that I like! EH b-day at my place.

Nose of mushroom, tilled earth and static charge (like the air after a lightening storm). Cherry, iron, and herbs combine nicely on a fairly long finish. Seems like some serious bottle variation based on prior notes posted here. No green notes for me.

On the pop and pour, this is quite dark in the glass. I’ve had a lot of Oregon Pinot recently, and this is darker and denser than most of those. The nose is very funky, with loads of barnyard and cheese, a good heap of green pepper, and maybe just a bit of steamy, stewed cherries in behind. The front end of the palate has a bit more of the red fruit, but the mid-palate still had a lot of both the green and the barnyard. There is structure here, and a fair amount of acidity, although the wine still comes across as a little burly. The finish lasts a good long while, but it is not entirely balanced. I try to use the same scale as most publications, which makes the 86 equivalent to roughly “you can drink this, but you’d probably prefer to have something better”. Given that I paid, direct from the winery, $102 all-in (price, shipping, and tax), that makes this one of the poorest values I’ve ever had. 2011 was a below-average vintage, so I’ll have to hope 2012 and 2013 came off a bit better.

This has a beautiful light red, nearly limpid, color. It is very red fruited, and light bodied, it is subtly earthy, and lightly of cherry iron, if you will. I would say it was nearing lovely, but it was a little drying and slightly thin in the middle. I cannot say what the future will hold. My guess it will walk a fine edge, will it plump out and put on weight, or stay pretty and lovely but come up just short and thin?

Pale to medium ruby, highly reductive/sulfur nose, followed by dark spicy black cherry, red cherry, and subtle clove, round but broad fruit on the attack followed by sweet berry fruit, soft tannins and juicy acidity, finish is a bit odd with grilled meats, rhubarb, Asian spice but also layers of ripe red fruit and earth, hmm
2/14/21 Second (and thankfully last) bottle of this '11 Mazoyères was hideously flawed, from the get go, corked was dry and broke on a gentle removal, nose had strong reduction and palate, well...was unpalatable, down the drain, washed the glasses and tried not to talk about

Much more transparent color than the Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon and the Clos de l'Obac served side by side. The dark wild berry driven nose made me think of Morgon Côte de Py 2010 by Foillard or such producer. When I went back to the wine later on there were more raspberries and a stemmy note that made me (second)guess (myself) and had this as Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. Highly recommended if you can find.

Leiden last event in 2018: Lovely red fruit nose, lovely red fruit taste, velvety, complex. I really like this, so good drinking. Some find the nose a bit volatile. Long finish.

Maison Ilan @ Medlar: Slightly dense, dark ruby. Nose a little flat initially, then slightly reductive. Again quite rich on the palate but less rounded than the Charmes. A slight bite. A fine velvety density. Lots here. ****

In my opinion not GC level in depth, concentration or complexity. Acdity a little out of balance on the midpalate. Very light in body and mouthfeel. Not very Geverey-esque. But at $79, I guess you can't complain.

Black and red cherry aromas with some roasted meat, coming across on the rich side. Slightly leaner flavors, moderate weight and length. Good+ balance. Good now, probably not lots of upside.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Served double blind to the tasting group, served alongside Sylvain Pataille 2009 Marsannay l'Ancestrale. Open 4 hours before serving. Black fruit a lean style with elegant textures and very good balance, even if not quite Grand Cru density. Still, a successful 2011 that is probably best to enjoy on the young side. Almost everybody correctly identified this as from Burgundy.

For me, the best of the 6 2011 MI offerings that I bought, but that is damning with faint praise. It's the only one so far that I even liked. Touch of stems, decent fruit and balance.

Drank two bottles of this wine with a wild boar dish, excellent combination. No decanting. Nose and taste full with spices and red fruit. Not a blockbuster but very elegant and complex wine. WOTN, everybody loved it.

Lovely nose, dark fruit, stem tones. Taste dark and red fruit, sweetness soft acidity, minerals. Medium bodied. Some tannins and slight dryness in the finish. Limited length. Drinks well now, wonder how this will develop.

At a horizontal tasting of 6 2011 MI wines. Decanted at 3, served around 7. Slight hint of TCA when initially decanted, but no backup. The TCA blossomed in the decanter and the wine was dumped.

Dinner in LA (b.o.s - Los Angeles, CA): Served blind. Very impressive wine. Aromas of dark fruits, lots of steaminess, and flora notes. This was a powerful wine but seemed to have a lightness on the palate to it. This is really good.

Pop and pour from a bottle that just arrived stateside. Note after 3 hours. Obviously drinking this very young - but attempting to get a handle on what these wines might become. Floral nose, with hints of grass, flint and rubber. A fair amount of acidity on the palate, tart fruit and mineral driven finish. Verdict - it is pleasant now, though a bit unique. Hopefully this has the structure to make old bones - I am cautiously optimistic.

Barrel sample. As you would expect, moving up to the grand crus brings more of everything to the table. Most notable is more mid palate stuffing and a more persistent finish. Very nice.
