Schloss Lieser from the 2000's are some of the greatest Riesling wines ever made. The 2002 Helden Spätlese is drinking at peak today. A ripe and mouth filling Spätlese kept in check by high acidity and a backbone of salt and extract. Ripe, honeyed tropical fruits accompanied by sour lemon/lime, Sicilian oranges and sweet red Apple. A terrific Spätlese with superb balance. Now - 2028

Dinner at Brian and Sylvia's (Duchess): An ageless wine - this was really yummy with Chinese food. I loved the nose on this, with its gentle notes of nectar and honey, sweet red apples and fuzzy peach, these garlanded with a crown of chamomile flowers. The palate was absolutely on point. This was a classic Spatlese. Neither unctuous nor powerful, but with a fresh, nicely-integrated balance to its charmingly delicious flavours of lemon curd and sweet red apples, all lined with a nice curl of minerality that trailled away into a long, energetic finish with just a dollop of honey at the sides. Drinking really nicely now.

Tasted blind. Wonderful nose of lemon, quince, flowers and petrol. Elegant palate with excellent sweet-sour interplay. I guessed JJ Pruem Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese. A really great Spatlese from Lieser. I dont know what others have tasted when I look at their notes. 94+

Rieslingfeier 2017; 2/17/2017-2/18/2017 (NYC): Tasted at large walkaround tasting. In a really good place right now. This showed dried mango, quince, light honey. beautiful finish.

Light, brassy gold. Nose is pineapple, grapefruit, a little gasoline. Initially smooth, sweet, full mouthfeel, followed by a faint residual spritzynees. Lime and grapefruit predominate. Medium acidity, not quite in balance with the sweetness on finish.

Nose of lime zest, petrol; palate of lime, lemon, wet stones, great richness and acidity, balanced, long citrus finish, very refreshing, and still fruit forward. Drinking well now and paired with Chinese banquet well, but easily will improve for years to come.

Petrol on parade with razor sharp acidity that cuts through the lime zest, lemon peel, fresh wet stones and honeysuckle like a laser. 93 pts and a winner!

July 4th became a German holiday with a march of wonderful Riesling's throughout the day. We enjoyed thick cut pork chops on the grill and sloshed more than a coupl e of these German gems down. This one was especially good with the telltale minerality and slate accompanied by the crisp, acidic fruit this varietal is so well know for.

Gibbs Tasting: Right off the bat--kickin’ minerals, terroir, “blue cheese”, lemon peel, earthy, herby nose; lite, delicate peaches in mth-not sweet, but almost dried; with fine spritz, beaut. fin. This is awesome and was a big hit.

This wine sells for about $22. I tried it at a tasting over the weekned but did not buy any. A telltale youthful sulfer aroma on the nose which blew off in the glass and will disipate with aging. Spritzy with ripe fruit notes. Green apple and pear. Medium to full bodied. 90 points.
