  • Petroleum smell, musty and old. Gorgeous color, even in the candle light of Gusto in NYC. A surprise and a delight. Complex and memorable. I chose without any knowledge of the winemaker, but know the growing area. 92 points

  • The appeal of Damijan's wines is their distinctiveness--the clarity and intensity of flavors they deliver, on the edge of madarization, with a striking amber-apricot color, and nose that combines lightly-candied ginger, honey, pear, and light floral notes. Clean and lingering finish. This bottle opened with a slight medicinal sense hat faded to show Damijan at its peak. But the second day, it had crossed the line and shows more madarized than I like. The wine will hold, but I doubt it will improve. Drink up.

  • More oxidized, maderized notes than on previous bottles. Perhaps past its peak.

  • Taking some meds and shouldn't be drinking, but the hell with it. Opened a bottle of Damijan's white to find the beautiful color I associate with this wine. Soft pale gold raisin with nectarine blush. In the mouth, however, something odd going on. Acid is top-heavy, slightly bitter and oxidized tasting. Corked? Don't think so. but will put the rest in the fridge to see if some air time helps.

  • Hmmmm. Smells oxidized and musty like sherry. Rich amber colour. Hints of melon and jasmine on the nose. Distinct rancio/oxidized notes on the palate. Thick, nice underlying structure, but dominated by the musty notes. Medium finish with some petrol and spice. Very complex and interesting, oxidation not unpleasant to me (was to Elena), but disjointed and a definite disappointment compared to Gravner. Doesn't play well with food either.

Left in decanter O/N - no change.

  • Deep golden butterscotch color. Medium aroma of spicy white fruit. Slightly spicy yellow fruit on the palate with some butterscotch bitterness on the finish. Tastes older than it is. 3/05

  • Damijan Podversic, who works steep hillside terraces in Friuli, very close to Slovenia, is one of the new generation of winemakers, who draws inspiration from producers like Gravner. He uses natural yeasts, wood fermenters, and long periods with the juice in contact with the grape skins to get amazing extractions, leading to intense color and flavor in his wines. The Kapjla Collio Bianco is a blend of Chardonnay, Tocai Friulana, and Malvasia Istriana. It sees a year in barrique, another year in large casks, and then 6 months in the bottle before release.

The color is astounding. Rich honey/amber. Intense nose of honey, tropical fruits, sweet and sour at the same time. Crisp, tightly wound. Spice, pepper and layers of bitter fruits. The terms that come to mind are things like apricot, melon, kumquat. Very interesting. Better as it warms a bit. Lovely, not for the faint of heart.

Sams had this on offer in its recent sale for $17/bottle. A steal at that price. I added a couple to the cellar that I will age for a bit.
