6/22 - top brunello for this vintage. Has a 10-15 year run left before peak. Has everything you want in a top Sangiovese. Alc says 15 but it was balanced no burn try one again over the holidays

Same note as last time. I opened this about 4 hours before I planned to drink it. I was amazed at how the smell permeated my kitchen. First few drags from the glass were great--fruity, soft, no heat. As the night wore on however, I feel like it became more flat and almost a bit gritty. I feel like I may have had it opened too long and missed the window?

Superb texture but flavors and any nuance is hidden behind a curtain (velvet) of tannins. Unsure if this will properly mature. I don't see the tannic structure fading before this is devoid of fruit. Enjoyable now.
Much thanks to Joe for opening.

Aug 2018: On its own, no decant, blind horizontal vs Altesino Montosoli and Pian dell'Orino. Was definitely outclassed, least complex of the bunch, but help up remarkably well. Impressive. Very dark flavors. 92.
July 2018: With grilled steak etc. Very smooth, soft and ripe, with great flavors. 92.
May 2018: Ripe fruit, cherries & cola on the nose. Soft, juicy, sexy black cherry palate. A bit of astringency on the finish. Med tannin, med acid, med finish. 93. I think it was served too warm though at 70° and should have been 60-65°.
Jan 2018: Yes. Super good. Ready.

Very nice indeed. At its peak now. Even though it looks lightly bricked, it tastes very fresh with beautiful fruit. Very well balanced. Significant tannins must have protected it well, and they are softened and well integrated now. We had another bottle of this at a holiday dinner last December and it was equally wonderful. IIRC this is better than the 2006.

Needs time to open up still. Was much better after two days in get fridge post opening. Decent good daily drinker now, as long as you do give it time to open. Not subtle, but lots of character. And for a brunello at $30 a bottle it remains a good deal at the lower end of the appellation.

Dark red. Intense nose of BlackBerry, leather and spice. Soon it calmed down and was much more elegant, showing black cherry and earth. Delicious earthy cherry flavours and some nice tannins.

Medium dark red. The nose is very dull at first and the finish is a bit soft. 30 minutes later it's a whole different wine.
The nose becomes very savory with notes of roasted meats, blood and black cherry. The flavours completely change as well, and the finish becomes crazy tannic. Definetly needs time in the decanter to open up.

This is the lean style of Brunello that we like with food. We had this with ribs off the grill and it stood up great. Raspberry and tart cherry flavors with enough backbone to tie it together, A very good wine for the price.

Decanted for close to two hours, but this was not enough. Needs a few more years and definitely a good decant. Very tight, but did improve across an hour of drinking.

Over the years, I've opened a few bottles of wine, mostly CA Zinfandels, where the alcohol level has been so overwhelming that there's been little hope of tasting the fruit or discerning other subtleties in the bottle. Here, Poggiarellino's bottle reads "15%". but the number causes me to wonder just how much liberty was taken with the 1.5% rule -- I wouldn't be surprised if this exceeded the allowed leeway. If you can get past the alcohol -- 4 hours after opening and decanting -- you'll find a ruby red color and a wine with high tannins that gives hope that it can be tucked away in the cellar and forgotten for a few years. I look forward to tasting it again when it has settled down. I add a point to the high end of good, i.e., 84 +1, in hopes that the alcohol level will aid in the long-term aging of this Brunello and not continue to overwhelm the wine. If you drink this wine in the next couple of years, don't get too close to the candles or the the room may go up in flames.

Much better than an Il Paradiso from the other night. In balance, with no high heat that is often a trademark of BdM. Great QPR

A very good brunello. Not super expressive, it might be past its prime, but a good combo of cherries, leather and earthiness. 89-90

Very good showing. Opened and decanted about 1.5 hours before drinking. Slightly less sweet and more dry than I had anticipated. Good upside surprise.
