Stunning. Not for the fruit-bomb Cabernet fan, but if you like finesse and restraint, this is for you. Gorgeous fresh dark fruit showing little significant drying, little hints of olive, spice, minerality, and violets just flit back and forth. Just oozes class and confidence. Still has life ahead, too.

Would be very hard pressed to identify this is as 06. Wine was very grippy and a touch green upon. First opening. Evolved in glass and softened. Loved the herbaceous notes along the wild bramble berry fruits like bay laurel and eucalyptus. Has that rugged wild sauvage quality that no one in Napa other than mayacamas does so well.

with some Cab Franc and Merlot. Medium nose less expressive than 03 and 05 but still lovely. Palate surprises on the palate, more than the nose would indicate, dark layers, dry structure, a little more wound up right now even as it shows explosive layers. Hard to pick a vintage!

Bold cranberry still - you can tell it’s got some age but it still has more to go. Full bodied and with lingering fruit. Grape jolly rancher but really nice. Great stuff.

From the tasting room. Nose of grape fruit rollup and what my wife described as "tin fermented tofu". Medium-bodied with medium acid and well-integrated tannins. Incredibly smooth, elegant, and balanced, but still a bit primary with flavors of cranberries and what I could best describe as blue freeze pop. Outstanding.

Mayacamas Mt. Veeder Estate Tasting: Classic, rustic, old Napa with a nod further back to the Old World. The 2006 Mayacamas seems to just be entering its prime; the tannins and acids likely have a couple more decades to go. Dark red and black fruits meet gobs of bay laurel, wood, earth, and spice in this complex mountain cab.

Three years since my last tasting of '06 Mayacamas, still drinking beautifully although I'm noting a few distinctions or dings to mention. This wine is noticeably more purple berry in color -- almost Welch's grape juice. Touches of alcohol, must and sour green pepper on the finish. Maybe a bit of ugliness is emerging just to keep me from getting too obsequious about this wine.

Dark ruby/purple turning violet at the rim with a nose of deep, dense purple fruits, vanilla, and toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied, focused, and intense but balanced by silky texture. Flavors of currant, blackberry, dark cherries abound; followed by notes of licorice, tobacco and espresso. Delicious, sumptuous, lively acidity. The finish is a bit short with hints of earth. Drink now with a 15-minute decant (or just leave in your glass for a few minutes) until 2022.

Dark red fruit on the nose, along with leather and spice, and some dirt at the end. Red fruit and leather on the palate, with pepper and dirt on the finish.

This wine is still early in its drinking window but we couldn't resist giving it a try. It did not disappoint. A while back I had heard that Mayacamas Vineyards was for sale -- and that there were no buyers -- because its wine making style had not kept up with the times. Lucky for us that they had the wisdom to ignore the infatuations with heavy, fruit forward bombs.
This wine was entirely classic in its presentation. A wonderful nose of sharp cherry, mild toasted wood notes and a broad and deep finish of cedar and eucalyptus.

It's too bad Mayacamas does not make wine like they used to. Their Cabernet Sauvignon from the 70's is still going strong today. Sadly, this lighter style of wine offers tart cranberry, spice and cherry, medium body and a tart, rustic finish. Some tasters will like this more than I did. It's not my style of wine.

Showing great savoury notes with a touch of acidity to maintain freshness. Wish I had another bottle to revisit in a few years.

Cool, mature, vertical; still rich and fleshy, balanced and juicy. In a good place.
