The cork is in great shape. The color has an orange edge but otherwise light-ish in the way an old style Barbaresco is. The nose is dried leaf and dried flower. A bit of dust. On the palate the wine is high in acidity with very firm tannins like an old style Barbaresco. The aroma and taste is complex with dry flower and dried fruit notes. Not sense of tiredness but probably won’t improve from here. I think this wine is great to drink now.

I’ve written reviews, and gotten paid for them, for over 20 years. I am not embarrassed to say I misjudged on this one. This was an ugly duckling a few years ago, allacid, tannin and Brett. But it has remarkably turned into a very decent drink. It has all the hallmarks of identifiable nebbiolo. It won’t win awards for finesse or a well-integrated finish, but it’s satisfying and delivers earthy pleasure now at 11 years of age. Still really good. In fact, remarkably good for the rock bottom price I paid 6 years ago. The CellarTracker drinking window seems to short to me, as this had held up quite well and still had a lot of life. I'm sure it won't keep indefinitely, but don't worry about drinking any you may have lurking in the cellar.

From magnum. Screechy acidity, low fruit and still fairly tannic. Andouzed it for 48 hours to coax out better balance, but when that proved unsuccessful I cut it with a fresh, younger new world red to get the crowd-pleaser I needed for a big Italian dinner. Don't think this is going to improve.
A wonderful example of how a Barbaresco that costs only $15 can be highly enjoyable and eminently ageworthy, with opaque dark color, refreshing acidity, drying tannin, a smooth lush texture, and delicious black and red cherry fruit. Flawless shape at 9 years old.

Nebbiolo is one the grapes whose dominate taste is powerful tannin and acidity that is so grippy and astringent that it can suppress other desirable flavors, such as a delicious fruit and caressing texture. Consequently, decades of aging that finally loosen that grip means that any attempt to enjoy the wine younger is punished. This Barbaresco however scales back the acid/tannin structure to where the young wine is more open, forward, and enjoyable instead of being punishing, while still leaving enough structure to keep the wine dry and still improve with age. So, while waiting for the great backward wines to age properly, you have a Nebiolo that is enjoyably delicious anytime.

PnP. Color is still quite purple with some transparency. On the nose aromas of violets, cherries, some savory herbs, a bit of iron and wet dirt. On the palate this is definitely mature and still good. Fruit, light+ to medium- acid with light+ to medium- tannin with just a bit of heat leaving a slightly mouth-drying finish. Sampled before and drinking with dinner of mildly spicy chicken and andouille gumbo over Charleston golden rice, sautéed collard greens and piece of baguette on the side. Although a bit shy, the wine is a bit shy beside the gumbo and definitely does not clash with it. Pretty mature at this point. Good.

Our last bottle, decanted 90 minutes before pairing with baked rigatoni. A bright ruby in the glass, with slow-forming legs, the very nice nose features candied cherry, rose petal, blueberry, licorice and cedar. Medium bodied with very good acidity. Great QPR on this barbaresco!

Drinking very nicely right still a bit of tannins with nice cherry fruit. Gave it a nice full decant for about 20-30 minutes and improved nicely over the next hour to enjoy with a roasted cauliflower pasta and arugula apple salad with lemon vinaigrette. Enjoy now or still has enough to go another year or maybe two.

PnP. Initial aromas of black cherry, raspberry, violet, menthol, wet earth, savory herbs, a bit of volatile. A bit closed on the nose. Only a couple of swirls brings the aromas back out with some sweet boysenberry. Color is deep garnet with only a little fade at the edge. On the palatefruit, a surge of acid and grippy tannin at the sides of the mouth with a bit of stem and a bit of tightness on the finish. Sample before and drink with a salad with grilled chicken and sauteed mushrooms for dinner. With the salad the menthol and floral aromas are more forward with warmth and heat moving in later and already less grip to the tannin than 15-20 minutes earlier. At about 50 minutes and after the salad more of the savory herb notes are showing up and there is still warmth in the finish. Delicious.

Rarely do Piedmont Nebbiolos drink so delicious in their first 8 years. And yet the early drinkability shows no signs of going into early deterioration, giving us the best of both worlds - enjoyable young and older. The ageworthy changes in the wine include darker color, smoother texture, less astringency, and a more forward fruit. One of the best matches with food.

An astonishingly good Nebbiolo for $15 a bottle. At this price, all I would expect the wine to be is a thin and pale shadow of a good Nebbiolo. Instead, the color is a deeply dark red. The nose is filled with red and black cherry fruit, forest floor earthiness, and violets. The sip comes into the mouth with a pleasant, smooth, and prolonged texture, a fruit close to plum, and a firm undertow of acidity and tannin. Equally important is what is missing - no mouth stripping and pleasure killing astringency or sour acidity. Overall, an enjoyable, decently concentrated, soothing, and fruity wine that does not sacrifice the acid and tannin structure that makes Nebbiolo refreshing, age worthy, and food friendly.

Decanted 3 hours before pairing with Meatballs in Sugo for Mother's Day dinner. A bright ruby with orange highlights at the rim, the nose features cherry, red currant, rose petals and the slight though unmistakable musty wet cardboard scent of cork taint. The wine remained drinkable, though, at least to me, and I could appreciate the very nice wine obscured a bit by the cork taint.

Nice Barbaresco particularly at this price point. Good balance, light bouquet of woods and berries. Silky on the tongue with a fairly long finish. Paired well with pan seared pork loin, lentils, and a salad.

All-in-all, a great QPR for a Barbaresco wine. Nice light garnet coloration with even a surprising touch of bricking for such a young barbaresco. Nose was a little tight but did reveal some cured meats, light cherry, and a bit of rose. Palate was primarily berry driven accompanied by subtle cloves. I personally couldn't pick up any oak, earth, tobacco, or leather notes. Tannins were mostly refined (although should integrate further with time) and in balance with acidity.

A light, pure, simple red with varietal character. A recent note indicated heavy oak - I'm very oak averse and I didn't detect much oak at all on this, certainly nothing overt. I found this to be a very feminine wine, perhaps lacking concentration and a pretty weak mid-palate, but still a very enjoyable wine.

First impression: disjointed and awkward, with faded fruit yet still too-prominent oak, which is the only notable thing about this wine. Raspberry oak juice. Would have been better to drink young.
After a day in the fridge, it has opened up some, if still leaning too heavily on the oak. But more secondary flavors coming out now, and not too bad after all.

A pleasant, simple wine. Nothing memorable. Tastes like Nebbiolo, a little muted, but the classic flavors are there. Honestly I must say I don't get all the over the top praise here. QPR is decent, but it's not off the charts or anything - a solid inexpensive Barbaresco. Leave it at that.

Decanted, medium-medium(+) ruby with regularly spaced slow-moving legs @13.5% abv. Medium(+) developed aromas of cherries, tar, herbs and the proverbial roses. Dry, medium(+) acidity, medium-medium(+) pluche tannins (they really are). Medium flavors of strawberries, cherries, mineral notes, tobacco. Chewy texture, balanced. Quaffable, not very complex and rather linear flavor palate. Great length with chalky at first, followed by dry fruit-driven finish. At $20 this is among the best QPR Barbarescos I have ever sampled.

Very nice brick color with thick slow legs. PnP gave nothing but tannins. Look up "closed wine" in the dictionary and you'll see a picture of this bottle just after opening. The Venturi to the rescue! Ten minutes and the fruit is beginning to show. I'm getting blackberry and granite on the nose, with black cherries, loam a bit of vanilla when the tannins softened. Nice long finish. Good balance between acidity and fruit. Try it again in a year.

This needs a good two hours in a decanter to open up. The nose changes from a muddy mix of subtle Ed and black fruits with an almost dank note, to high-toned bright red fruit nose with a hint of cherry cola. Good concentration of tart red cherry and raspberry, pomegranate and red plum. Medium bodied with medium plus acidity, finishes with a hint of vanilla. Overall not profound, but a good value wine.

Definitely needed to breathe for awhile before drinking. Color is fairly deep purple with a little orange towards the edge of the glass. Aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and perhaps a little tobacco. Blackberry and boysenberry flavors with a nice dry finish. Drank with grilled chicken, asiago cheese bread and a fresh green salad with vinaigrette dressing. Although there were some initially harsh notes to the mouth feel of the wine, after about 40 minutes the wine integrated quickly and became quite delicious.
Wonderful food wine that went well with our Italian dinner. Very drinkable upon opening, as it doesn't have the huge tannins of a typical young nebiollo. Cherry and blackberry, with tar and expresso.

1st tasting: Medium color. Dry entry leads to explosive flavors. Not a lot of fruit but plenty of nebbiolo-style dusty tannins in the finish. A testament to the quality winemaking generally found at Italy's large wine coops. Needs another 5-10 years to smooth out. Outstanding value at the $15 I paid for it. Tasted twice.
Tasted 10/8/16: Still light in color and turning slightly brickish. Fruit beginning to be undercut by a forest floor/mushroom character. Some bitter tea in the finish. Might not be to everyone's taste.
Tasted 10/19/16: A much more pleasurable experience. Was it because of the excellent pizza (Pagliai's, Mankato, MN)? The excellent company? Who knows? At any rate, for $15/btl it's a very good value.

Had this over 3 nights and surprisingly showed best upon PnP on 1st night. Tart red fruits, red cherry, and earth surrounded by a bit of oak treatment. Tannic as it became more exposed to air on 1st night, which then began to soften and integrate into 3rd day and the fruit became more noticeable. Simple Nebbiolo that serves fine as a daily drinker, yet probably could use some more time to settle down. (88+)

Start out with nice dusty tannins with good bite, some darker fruits, and good acidity. The nose is marginal and not that expressive. The initial structure doesn't last too long, but what remains is a very nice food wine. I love it for the price.

Light ruby red with light orange edges. It had aromas of red cherries and spice. It was balanced, smooth and good and dry. On the palate, it was rich in red berrries and earthy spices. The finish was long and dry. This good age for another few years to reach peak.

Excellent QPR. Had with dinner at an Italian BYO. Despite the variety of dishes (rabbit ravioli, duck breast) it went very well with all. Light in color, it has a light fruit nose & taste. decent tannins as well. some hints of spice that were slightly muted by the fare.

Light violet color. Sweet red fruits, distant spices, and black pepper on the nose. Strawberries, a bit of mushroom, some black pepper, raspberries. Raspberries and strawberries, accompanied by tannins with a firm grip, guide you into the finish. The berries fade after a bit and the mushroom dominates until the fade, which takes quite a while.

Simple but satisfying. Good tannic structure that is easy to drink now. A nice choice for a daily nebiollo.

exceeds my expectations ... I keep expecting a $15 barbaresco.. and this shows up, .. not a great barbaresco, but wish I'd bet big on this with 2 or 3 case purchase... this is that family pizza night, or any pizza night wine that just delights all.... GREAT QPR!

Pretty tight when opened, it was transformed after 2 hours. Nicely tart with a great dark berry undertone and mid-tannins. Great Barbaresco, especially for the price. But definitely needs decanting right now.

Slow Ox for 60 minutes before initial smell and taste. Drank on porch with Grilled Tuna, Risotto with Porcini and Steamed Broccoli. Did not take detailed notes this time. Wine was delicious and balanced with cherry and dirt. We enjoyed it during and after dinner.

1 hr decant. The tannins present strongly but not overly assertive. Blackberry, cola, anise on the palate. QPR high for the price.

Excellent QPR on this tasty mid-weight Barbareso. Paired very well with linguini with a red sauce with beef and Italian sausage.

Prominent nose. Ripe, concentrated berry fruit on palate with anise finish. Bracing tannins. Huge value at $15 and a big improvement over the last bottle which was corked. Would benefit from a few more years of aging, but delicious now.

Really solid for the price. Started with the classic gripping tannins that I love with nebiollo, but those didn't last too long. What was left was a nicely drink wine with dark berries, earth, and softness on the finish.

Nice nose that took some time to open up. Not real complex and a bit on the feminine side. Typical nebbiolo with smooth tannins and lasting finish. Great with food. Excellent QPR.
