Very interesting with cherry fruit up front, lots of graphite and smoky finish. Better the next night with much smoother character, moderate black cherry fruit with a longer somewhat spicy finish.

The first bottle from my case was tighter than I recalled out of barrel. Actually paled next to the 2002. Redder and a tad astringent too.. I'm a little concerned that the material for five years is lacking. Mais bien, on verra.

I was sipping the Davis Bynum Estate during the first day of Russian Barrel Daze this year, and had a sudden uncanny recollection of tasting 1990 Burgundies in the Jardins de Luxe in Paris during a party in (as I recall) the Spring of 1994. The pricier cuvee of Bynum is tastier today, very true, but this '03 Estate has the berries, toast, damp earth and restraint which spells budding greatness of the old country Beaunes. May have detected peat or mushrooms; (I took no notes); As with the 1990s in France, the 2003 Russians are suddenly (not strangely) scarce.

Yummy. Bright red fruits, raspberries. A little astringent toward the back. Very food friendly. Highly enjoyable.

T. Edward Wines Fall 2006 Portfolio Tasting (New York City): Light ruby color. Funky nose of earth and red cherries. On the palate it has good acidity but is perhaps a bit thin.
