3 years since my last bottle. Pnp. 07 BdM mostly fall into one of two categories: the overripe ones, often from the Southern cluster in Montalcino which showed burned fruit and tar notes in their youth (eg Ucceliera) and then in some cases picked up oxidative notes as they aged (eg Tenuta Nuova). Then there is the second category which managed to get around these shortcomings in this (too) hot vintage, but still suffered a bit from fairly muted aromatics likely due to the lack of cool(ing) nights during 07. In general I feel the Riservas showed better than the Annatas, and this Caparzo falls clearlyinto the second bucket. Fully resolved upon Pnp, this has lost the richness of merely 3 years ago and is a medium bodied Brunello, almost a little lean, with the usual typical mix of earthy notes and a touch of dry fruit. Enjoyable but starts to fade a bit with about 90 min in the open bottle with the fruit leaving and solely earthy notes dominating. Short to medium finish. 92 upon opening and then drifting towards 89-90. Would drink now without decant.

Hosting JJ at home. Drank in Conterno Sensory. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of sour red cherries, red plums, earth. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), integrated high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of classic sour red cherries, red plums, earth, balsamic, sweet spices. Very long finish. Very good quality. No stewed ripe fruit in sight. Defies the vintage. Drinking in a good place already, and could still develop a bit more.

Very good, oak, spices (nutmeg?), leather. It's light but has the layers it was lacking before if u are into the Brunello profile. Nuanced rather than powerful,bi understand why some don't love these wines.

Four years later this is a little better on the first night with beef bourgignon—two nights later it lost some. Cherries, some spice, medium on the palate—medium finish. Since this seemed to lose something, I would suggest drinking in one sitting, with food and within the next couple of years.

Dusty raspberries and rose petals on the nose; fruit still pronounced on the palate, with lightly drying, soft tannins; long, long saliva-inducing finish. I’d score it higher if not for my general dislike of (young?) Montalcino dirt-like terroir, of which there is very little in this case.
First bottle from a case of 6, unfortunately slightly corked. Still you can clearly see that this is another very good 07 Riserva with a medium body and nicely integrated acidity giving it a pleasant lift. None of the overripeness, burned fruit and high alcohol levels (this is a moderate 14%) many of the annatas seem to suffer from. Galloni got the vintage completely wrong, it’s the Riservas to go for in 07, and with a few exceptions a pass on the Annatas.

Decanted for an hour. A bit tight on the nose otherwise this baby was singing when paired with homemade brick oven pizza. This is a very well structured wine that should only improve with age.

Nice nose, cherries and other red fruit, some subtle earthy notes, mild spice, medium tannins and great finish. Improved significantly after being opened for an hour. I suspect this wine has years ahead of fantastic drinking.

Lovely fruit, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. Medium bodied. Tannins lurking in the background but just powerful enough to provide a foundation. Opened but an hour but not decanted. Marvelous food wine.

I have very little experience determining if a wine should be aged longer before consuming, but after after tasting this and trying another wine from the same vintage, I think this one might need a few more years to mature.
Nose was dark and earthy, with some mild dark fruits. Early palate, cocoa blueberry raspberry. Earthy graphite and licorice. Finish is long but tight tannins and drying acidity.
It improved dramatically after standing open for three hours, after only one hour it was really tight.

Cherries with an anise based spiciness. Nice finish, but not particularly long. This may need a little more time to fully come together. Paired with a beef/ mushroom stew and it was complementary.

Notes from memory, so will be brief. Cherry, sweet tobacco, very nice nose. Tannins nicely integrated, very smooth. Still seemed a bit primary, will like to try again in another two years. 91+

Nose: dark red cherry, tobacco, smoke, and some tea notes. Palate: rich and full of red berries and cherry. Some slight herbal notes and a polished oak element. Finish: nicely sweet and spicy with a tannic edge that brings out an anise note.
Solid wine. Fatter than I expected but nice.

Very, very nice. Not as good as the Clarendon Hills Liandra Syrah that it followed - during a terrific roasted duck with berry sauce dinner - but very good indeed. Deep, dense, dark eggplant in color; a very berry nose, raspberries, cherries, licorice and spice with great balance and integration. The best finish I have had in a very long time. The spice thread in this wine actually supports the distinctive structure, carrying through the palate and completing the finish. I do not agree with WS that this is a 96, but in a couple of years, it might.

We liked this wine, but I'm not seeing the deeper complexity which would indicate that it should have a much higher rating. Try another in a few years.

Appearance: Semi opaque magenta/orange with a razor thin orange rim.
Nose: Very light red fruit with an earthy undertone and a bit of tar and ever so slight green/floral notes.
Palate: Light to medium bodied with a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. The acidity is lively and crisp with soft and supple tannins and some lingering fruit character.
Finish: Long lasting, dry and astringent.
Thoughts: It's a very easy to drink wine with a smoothness and structure that is good if not slightly one dimensional (ok, one and a half).

Decanted 4-6 hours. Wonder if it didn't really need long decant because it seemed to soften too much and nose was very light compared to previous tasting. Still lovely, very well balanced. Long finish.

Same style as the regular 2007 Brunello but with a more complex body and elegance. Bought for 40 € whereas the regular Brunello is about 24 €. The Riserva is really good, but not so good that it always makes sense to pay 16 € more.
