I had the opportunity to open 6 bottles of this at once for a charity wine tasting. Plenty of bottle variation from quite fruity to barnyard to mud. Some of the bottles showed a terrific combination of rustic complexity and powerful Syrah fruit. Others were just muddy and unpleasant. Even at the price, this is too variable a wine to buy two bottles for every one I want to drink.

Quite a few flawed bottles from this producer, in this case the cork was loose in the bottle neck so the wine was oxidised. This is a very good wine when it works, but the bottling quality control is abject.

Very nice nose with typical blackberry and violets notes but also with a touch of green stem. Lurking in a background a hint of riper strawberry, maybe indicating its southern origin. Otherwise, it is very St Joseph in style. Rather similar palate with a surprising tannic grip on the finish (again, very slightly bitter and green). Overall a very good Syrah with nice freshness. Well done.

Roberson Wine Fair: Sour plums on the nose. A bit of barnyard. Unconvinced.

a shame cos there's some good fruit here.
