  • Bottle was leaking and cork was completely saturated. This poured out a very deep gold color. However, with a sniff I could tell it wasn't ruined.

    Delicious but simple. Petrol, apricot, very close to dry.

  • Felt a sticky mark below the capsule on this bottle during a cellar check. Signs of seepage with capsule removed. Soaked cork broke in half and disintegrated. A golden yellow robe, with a whiff of petrol, apple and slate on the nose. Green apple and seedless green grapes on the palate, with slate, less sweet than expected, and still with good acidity. However, a shortened, clipped finish seems to betray a slightly off palate. Previous bottles of this wine have been solidly in the 90s scoring-wise. Shall have the remainder of this momentarily with some Italian sausage frittata for Mother's Day brunch with my soon-to-return partner.

  • Well balanced with not too much sweetness. Not very complex, but pleasant with a little bit of lemon rind, pear, and floral notes. Enjoyable. Good QPR.

  • Served with lightly seared tuna with Asian spice profile. Worked very good. The bright upfront fruit is classic. The middle and finish are boring, but for the price paid I am happy.

  • Presents with classic Riesling fruit up front, but fades through the middle and into the finish where there is limited interest and balance. Good nose and color and there are hints of age in the first third of the palate. I like it for the price, but would have been disappointed had I paid more for it.

  • Easy to understand why there was such a sale on it at JJB. This is a pretty basic Riesling - lacks any of the additional complexity found in the better bottles. Slightly sweet balanced with a touch of sour (maybe paint thinner?). No real evolution on the palate. Not bad for a hot summer's day or a 'beach wine' (esp with the sale), but not something I'd seek out again.

  • Took to an event. Problematic cork on his one, requiring filter decant. Maybe even a touch better than the last from 15 months ago, but none of these impressed me, although several people seemed to enjoy it more than I did. I think it's probably because they don't drink as much good Riesling as I do, so it's a positive surprise for them. 85-86

  • Fairly one-dimensional, and a bit too sweet, but enough acididity balances it out and makes it a pleasant wine.

  • A bit of petrol and flowers on the nose with a medium golden color. Peach and pear flavors and a bit of early effervescence, with plenty of residual sugars but missing the acid to back it up. Short finish. Glad we paired with a spicy pad thai, but still there are better wines for the money. Have one more bottle but won't hold it much past its' 10th birthday.

  • Yellow apple, peach, orange, slate, some florals and petrol on a thick sweet body. It's quite ripe, but not a lot of drive or focus. Tasty, and good with lemon pepper hot wings, short finish. Actually probably a bit better than my last exactly one year ago.

  • Hint of petrol, like a Sauternes, but otherwise fairly classic Riesling profile. RS rather high, and acidity verging on insufficient, but pairs beautifully with a bit of spice in the food.

  • Light golden color. Fair amount of initial spritz. Nose of lime, chalk, some apple, bit of machine oil. On the palate, fairly weighty with lime oil, orange, slight slate quality. Quite round, really lacking any energy. Insufficient acidity to make this work. Really has neither enough sweetness nor acidity to go anywhere. Well perhaps day 1 was strike one, and day 2 likewise. But maybe this wine bade the game go on, and behind two strikes would deliver a mighty blow...

    "Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
    The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
    And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
    But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out."

  • nose - petrol riesling nose
    mouth - lacks requisite acidity yo balance the sweetness. needs an appropriate food pairing (such as spicy asian) to really work well.

  • Attractive golden color. Medium citrus nose. Sweetness on the front flows nicely to grapefruit and lime middle. There is some acidity in the medium length finish. The end is unbalanced. Seems like something is missing at the end of the taste. Good wine, not great at this time.

  • -- popped and poured –

    NOSE: sugary lime; what was a faint whiff of petrol on Day 1 became a moderate, but not overpowering, note of the same on Day 3; no botrytis; moderately expressive; not complex.

    BODY: medium bodied; pale golden yellow color; no spritz.

    TASTE: rather light, classic Rheingau Riesling flavors – ripe pear, lime, metallic minerality, light petrol, and a hint of light smoke; not complex; loosely structured and lacking acid; this wine is either a bit sleepy right now, or is simply disappointing; 10% alc. was a bit surprising; short-medium finish (16 – 28 sec.) of moderate intensity (finish lengthens as the wine warms from a chill to room temperature).; a true Spatlese. Many prior positive experiences with this producer set me up for a great let-down with this bottle – the regular (non-goldkap) bottling from this vineyard and producer in this vintage is far better, imo. I have one more bottle that I’m going to let sleep for at least 5 years – I’m hoping this is just in a weird place right now, but the lack of structure and acid give me much cause to worry.
