Burghound Symposium Asia - 1993 vintage dinner (Shanghai): Voila, the first wine that impressed. Light garnet. Delicate nose of game, spice, red fruit, complex. Delicate, fine palate. A ballerina of a BM even more so surprising when you consider that this comes from a terr rouge plot. Lalou is a master. Burghound told us over dinner that this wine is ultra rare because lots of the crop was lost during biodynamic farming in the capricious 1993 vintage. Impressive all the way. 96+

This is a bruiser, dark red in color and not a hint of bricking. Powerful snd ripe nose at first I guessed either this is a new world pinot or it is not a pinot at all! Dark ripe berries, with active swirling revealed a bit of floral edge and some spices. Very tight, big snd young still, I wouldn't open another bottle of this in 5-10years and still on the way up.

Drank at Per Se in NYC - opened, poured into decanter and drank over several hours. Strong nose of savoury funk, smoky notes, red licorice and hickory. On the palate this was brilliant with complex and savoury flavours of dark strawberries, lighter red fruit and leather. Very deep and long with fine yet firm tannins. This should improve for another 15-20 years. Exceptional. 96+

Had this together with a '85 Bonnes Mares from Georges Lignier. Both were showing very well. Lignier was classic example of a mature burgundy. However, D'Auvenay just had that extra "punch" on impact which is so typical of wines from Leroy. Great upfront bouquet that kept opening up with aeration. Good length and intensity, but have to agree not as complex as one would expect at this stage. Everyone agreed that this wine was still too young and will definitely improve given the intensity of fruit and the tanins ecveryone was excited about its potential. Just imagine how good this wine can be if it was from a better vintage (or if it were cheaper...)!

Classic pinot, still drinking a bit young. Surprisingly different from later vintages of this wine -- well balanced, a lot more subtle, but also a lot less interesting. I'm going to give the rest of my inventory of this at least another 10 years.

Fantastic. One hour after opening was all bouquet, structure and finish. After two hours put on significant weight and opened up beautifully.

Stem and candy aromatics. Deep cherry develops. (1144/1150)

Another wine that stood out... classic Bonne Mares aromas, full and remained young.

Some Wine Tasted at the Zachys Auction (Four Seasons Restaurant - New York NY): Small taste, brief note. This had been open approx 3 hours. Red and black cherry, lots of spice on nose and palate. Outstanding mineral streak here. Good now, but still a bit firm, so I expect upside from here.

Big tannic and tight. This has years to go before it evolves. The potential is there but it needs time. Try again in 10 years.
