Decanted for 2 hours before service - manageable, but 5-6 hours would have been better. In the glass, pinkish-auburn at the rim, shading quickly to deep, dark maroon at the center. On the nose, a reticent mix of cherry, damp green wood, and flowers. On the palate, initially round, full bodied, and smooth, opening into a satisfying, complex mix of fruit, minerality, and herbal notes, followed in relatively short order by grippy tannins. The raw materials seem to be here, but it's going to take some time.

(Blind tasting) Full and rich nose. Asphalt, cedar and oak. Very modern. Very polished. Elegant and flowery after time in glass. Medium-fullish body. Very elegant, very balanced and polished. So fine-grained and elegant tannins. Pure and a bit Bdx-like. Tar and roses and cedary oak. Luxury Barolo in the modern idiom, but at the same time so origin typical.

Fathers' Gathering (RPM Italian, Washington D.C.): Expressive nose displaying concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, dry cherry, ink, sap, tar, balsamico, vanilla/oak, dark spices and iron. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, rich and opulent, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, still very noticeable tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with iron and tar at the end. This definitely expressive a very modern style, textbook Gaja. It needs another decade to reach the peak.

Very dense and packed on the nose - cherries, rose petals, balsamic notes, spices. On the palate tannic and grippy, lots of acidity, very bright and intense. Tight and a little muted still. Very long. Needs time. 91-92+(+)

Italy vacation Part 1; 10/22/2017-11/5/2017 (Florence and the Tuscan countryside): Light ruby; aromatic, beautiful nose, red fruit, roasted red peppers; palate is light bodied, riper red fruits but still balanced, high youthful tannins, high acidity; medium-long clean length. Lovely balanced wine, but it hasn't yet developed enough complexity. Pricey for how this is drinking now, though really well priced at 125 euros. 91

Expensive Winos for dinner (Frederiksberg): Initially rather fruity and hard to identify, but on the second day, oh my, what a change; deep, intense, rich, complete with notes of dark fruit and cocoa - modern, yes, but with plenty of local character to back it up. Great potential here.

The wine looks ruby colored. It smells like blackberry, blueberry, raisin, fig, mushroom and toast. Drink from small format.
