This was from a 375 that I bought at a restaurant. After about a half hour of opening up, this shows off a savory and classic quality with melded tones of black cherries, licorice, herbs, some funky notes, violets, tobacco leaf, and some olive tapenade. The Medium/full bodied feel is silky and refined in a light-heavyweight sense along with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This has a real lengthy finish that leans heavy into the deliciously savory side! This is why I drink Tempier!!! It’s all of the slightly feral and savory goodness that you want from Mourvedre and it's in full flight right now.

Such a great wine! PnP. Dark red color. Loads of flowers and earth on the nose. Dark cherries and blackberries on the palate. Lovely texture with medium depth and medium finish. Love it!

Mourvèdre (~ 75%) with Grenache and Cinsault and a smaller proportion of Carignan and Syrah, 14% vol.
Decanted 2 hours before dinner. On the nose red fruit, earthy notes with a fresh floral touch. On the palate good freshness, still present tannin that was hardly recognized during the meal but got more pronounced when drinking the last glass on its own, medium to full bodied, long finish.
Very classical Bandol that is in a very good shape now, but there is no hurry to drink the last bottles, it has enough structure to age in grace, drink now till 2032.

The best regular bottling Tempier I have had and I have been drinking Tempier since the 80s. Extraordinarily polished for a Tempier, with superb balance. A beautiful tasting experience. I still love, and maybe prefer the more rustic vintages, but Daniel R. made a beautiful wine this vintage.

One of my favorites! 1hr+ decant. Dark red color. Prime drinking age. Absolutely insane nose of perfume, flowers, earth, and cow shit. Same on the palate with medium depth and finish. So unique and awesome!

This bottle is very similar to the one I had a year ago. It has a bright red color with a slightly orange rim. It is full bodied, with dark red fruit, garrique, balanced acidity and a medium finish. There is still amble tannin on the palate. With the acidity and tannin, I think this could age for a long time.

Decanted an hour before dinner. Starts a bit rustic, requires still some time to come together and to overcome the high alcohol but then it starts to sing. Intense mixture of red fruits, herbs and earthy notes, full bodied and long finish. Classical Bandol, keep in the cellar or give it a long decant, 91-92.

This wine is ready to drink but still has many years of life ahead as there is still ample tannin on the palate. As is typical for Bandol, in my opinion, this wine is rustic in a good way. It is full bodied, with dark red fruit, garrique, balanced acidity and a medium finish.

P&p; drinking pretty well right away, and gets better with an hour+ of air in the bottle. Tons of garrigue scents, quite herbaceous, with tarry/earthy depth and floral accents. Dark fruit, balanced and tasty. Good acidity, and medium-strength grippy tannins. Well put together, balanced, characterful, tasty, moreish wine.

Very disappointed with this wine. The first Dom. Tempier I’ve had without a bit of character. Just a sort of innocuous fruitiness. Sure hope this doesn’t bode ill for future vintages.
Drank over two sittings using Coravin. First sittings showed a young palate with more fruit, a bit heavy handed. The second a few weeks later, much more developed and balanced, fruit had given way to cedar, etc., more enjoyable for me, suggests I should leave the rest of my bottles for a little while. From a 375ml.

PnP at Zuni Cafe in SF: Nothing more to say than already said. On a summer afternoon, this is the wine that you want with you. Floral, racy yet delicate. Makes you want to have a glass of this everyday.

P&p; enjoyable right out of the bottle but a bit tight; more expressive with 2+ hours of air in the bottle. Fairly primary, with lots of darkish fruit/flowers and herbs/garrigue, with some nice (though limited) underlying earthy/smoky/savory/meaty depth; all quite cohesive on the nose but less so the palate, with otherwise pleasant acidity and fairly assertive tannins seeming to clash a bit with each other. Tasty, and offers some character/typicity, but best with food. Seems like it could use a few years in the cellar; whether it should be aged long term or not, I am uncertain but guess probably not.

Opened and decanted an hour ahead of chicken marsalla pasta with mushroom sauce. Inky, dark purple-crimson color with a rose hue. The nose brings thick garrigue and funk - even after a few hours open - that establishes a pleasant savory tone. Balancing the savory notes are layers of blueberry pie, blackcurrant, and Manhattan cherries with bitters. The palate is medium, round, textured, and supple, bringing candied raspberries and blackberries, dark cherries, soy sauce, mushrooms, and tar, concluding with baked rhubarb and eggplant. The finish is juicy with refined, balanced tannins. The purity of fruit is outstanding from entry through the tail, which lasts 30-seconds. In a good window now but will likely shut down in the near term, reawakening after 2020. Outstanding vintage. Technical score: 93. Enjoyment score: 94.

Ordered off the list at Bistro 501 in Lafayette IN for $98. While a decanter might have been nice, it showed well for its youth. This was the base bottling. Ruby in color with some purple at the core. The nose has nice. Very clean, slightly earthy, plenty of purple fruit with some red. Plums and black berries and slight dark cherries. On the palate, there is a good streak of acidity that comes off as spritzy at first but it is the acidity. With air and food, it settles down. Plenty of black raspberries and plums. Some depth. Firm tannins. Needs time but not a whole lot. Worked well with the food. A nice wine that one doesn't often find on restaurant lists anymore, especially in rural Indiana.
375mL. Popped the cork on this and it smelled very bretty, so it was decanted for an hour. Still a bandaid-y nose when I returned to it. There's some interest in the form of blue-fruits, violets and oaky tones underneath, but largely it's dominated by a leathery, peaty sort of aroma. The palate is really nice and chewy with chalky fine tannins and nice structure and acid. Would have liked to see a bit more fruit but not bad for what it is.

Youthful, fruity nose with good intensity. Plum, dark chocolate and a hint of garrigue. Something reminiscent of Bdx, maybe the dirt. Some iron notes. Lacks a bit depth. Fullish, balanced palate. Generous but a bit robust. Liquorice, spice and good acidic finish. More spice will come in three years, but I don't think the fruit is there. A bit stern.

Continues to be delicious. Game, iron, herbs, and fresh red berry fruit initially; developing a littler darker and spicier note with air. Full bodied, but an elegant and refined wine with lovely balance. Likely still improving, but really good now so hard to actually see it being better with more age.

Not bad but just not really feeling it. But I don't have much experience with abandon wines. It tastes a lot like cool climate Syrah really; strong garrigue element and red/black fruits. No real flaws though a bit of heat. Might need to try again.

Nose is wet earth, hay, horse manure. The palate is lighter and not as earthy as I thought it would be. Menthol, strawberry, blood orange. Still tannic. Needs a few years. But a good drink. Might be a little overpriced for what it is actually.

Decanted and poured, this bottle gave very good to excellent showing. Similar to previously tasted bottles, on this occasion the wine seems more forward and accessible. This wine can drink well now with decanting but does at times show a somewhat reserved personality.

This wine is really great to me. I love the complexity and balance. I second my tasting notes below, but one extra note I noticed on a re-taste is black tea on the finish. This is a common entry in my tasting notes of red wines. I think it's 90% from the tannins.

Second Sunday Group: Domestic Grenache (Frank's): Dark inky color with notes of black fruit, oak spice and plum. Brighter on the palate, more red-fruited than black, with firm tannins that finish with a sweet edge. Lingering finish. Another winner from Tempier.

Must admit I've had a fondness for varietal, and in particular this wine, for many years. Mourvèdre, also known as Monastrell in Spain. It's terrific!! Domaine Tempier really does a nice job with this grape. Enough alcohol to bring out some blackberry fruit, and nice tannins to pair with meats. Should age well, but tasty now.

Exciting wine with a gripping nose. Rich blackberry fruit with freshly ground coriander, animal aromas, and mocha. Fruit and non-fruit characteristics are both strong. Oak is perfectly balanced; it doesn't dominate, but it's unmistakably present. Tannins are strong.
I believe mourvèdre is one of the most underrated varietals. This wine proves me right.

Decanted for 10 hours and consumed over the next five hours after that. Very raisiny and gamey with subtle rosemary and a hint of mint on the nose. Very good but prob would have really shined with a 24 hour decant or several years more of age. Good thing I still have three more, this one was just to get a feel for this vintage.

Nose: The nose shows more funk and earth at first, but it pulls back into a more cool side with violets, black cherries, leather, tobacco leaf, and blackberries.
Taste: Medium/Full bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is quite youthful, but the class is there with black cherries, pepper notes, violets, meaty tones, bitter chocolate, leather, and some blackberries.
Overall: I would love to see where this goes with age. While there is a masculine base, there is an underlying nuance as well. There is a lot of promise for the future while it has a youthful enjoyment at the same time.

PNP right out of cellar. Tight for the first 45 minutes until it came to temperature and some much needed air. Great pedigree, complex palate with good depth on the mid palate. Finish is a bit short right now. I would give this another 2-3 years cellar time.

Second Domaine Tempier that I drank in less than six months. Such a powerful wine! Dark, full-bodied, but gentle in attack. Tannins are balanced, allowing this Bandol to provide notes of raspberry and tobacco while letting you enjoy its long-lasting aftertaste. Bandol reds are a hidden jewel in Provence!

Funky nose, juicy round entry, and a sharp, unresolved finish. Decanted 3+ hours and opened up slightly, but this still needs time. Far more robust and fruit-forward than previous vintages. Look forward to drinking more of these after 2017.

Biodynamic. Decanted this for four hours but not enough. Only another two to three hours plus time in glass set this straight. This is a very dark wine. Seriously reduced to start but that gives way with musky animal aromas and burnt rubber coming to the fore. The palate gets much smoother over time, but is still very wild and feral. Not really my thing to be honest. Would no doubt improve with age and if you're drinking now it needs a LONG DECANT. Not very good value at 30 euros but might be an ok buy in a better vintage - 2011?

Ripe fruit, spicy, leathery and earthy aromas. 18-20 month in oak. Good structure for ageing. It is drinking quite well now thanks to the liquorish and violets flavours and smooth tannins. Full bodied.

Dig SF Kermit Lynch Tasting (San Francisco): A rustic and somewhat tannic wine. Skunky and perhaps even a bit reductive. Improved a bit with air. Savory sage, dark fruits, iron, almost bloody really. A fresh feral wine per Tempiers usual offerings.

Really outstanding young Bandol. Classic nose of dark fruits, iron, garrigue, and a lovely sanguine freshness. The fruit on the palate is fresh and delicious with a beautiful crispness to the wine. There are plenty of tannins and this will drink well for many years.

Impromptu Saturday Double Blind Tasting $30-$50 (Bin 75): Dark core, bright reddish violet rim; reductive as heck, smoky, black pepper, young, nutty, grown somewhere near the sea; smooth texture with tannin in the background, yellow grapefruit is a bit bizarre, young; tasty overall, needs time to shed the reductive qualities and come together some more; called Tempier Bandol.

Dark violet with a scarlet rim. A bit reductive on the nose, but blew off with air leading to cracked peppercorn, blackberries & savory aromatics. Beautifully full bodied yet lithe & textured. More brambly fruit with some meatiness emerging on the mid palate. The richness is remarkably tamed with some bright acid and silky tannin. This will evolve & over the course of the night an apricot note became quite apparent. 2012 is looking like a powerhouse vintage for Tempier.

Bring on the "French Funk." This was blatant barnyard on the nose from the very first minute. Everyone at the tasting was talking about it.
The nose was so pronounced that the gamy red fruit with garrigue and herbs was almost completely overshadowed.
This is a good wine, but not the greatness that Tempier has been in the past for me. I'd recommend aging a few years to see if everything here will come together and get better integrated.

Mourvedre is one of my favorites and that undoubtedly colors my scoring. An average wine with a varietal i love usually outscores a great wine whose grape I don't. Thats human nature. Bandol is the epicentre for this varietal, and Tempier is one of the prominent names. This has a lovely but understated nose and flavor with average complexity, grip, and finish. Ive had better mourvedres elsewhere; however this is a worthy purchase nevertheless. Next ill try a higher end offering from the Tempier estate.

Ruby. Smoke, heath, peppery game, plums and fragrant strawberries on the nose. Deep line of fruit on the palate, vibrant from front to back, firm tannin base and crisp acid frame, very long finish. A beautiful wine, full of grace and power. 50 + 17 + 17 + 8.

Decanted and poured, this wine gave a very good showing with aromatics of dark fruits, stone, leather and herbs. The color is a dark ruby to purple. It is youthful and vibrant. The medium to full bodied palate shows good overall balance but perhaps lacks some structure and firmness that keeps the from giving a more compelling showing. The wine gives medium a medium length finish with subtle tannins. Accessible now, this wine should benefit from a couple of years of bottle age.

This wine is really great to me. I love the complexity and balance. I second my tasting notes below, but one extra note I noticed on a re-taste is black tea on the finish. This is a common entry in my tasting notes of red wines. I think it's 90% from the tannins.

Dark violet with a scarlet rim. A bit reductive on the nose, but blew off with air leading to cracked peppercorn, blackberries & savory aromatics. Beautifully full bodied yet lithe & textured. More brambly fruit with some meatiness emerging on the mid palate. The richness is remarkably tamed with some bright acid and silky tannin. This will evolve & over the course of the night an apricot note became quite apparent. 2012 is looking like a powerhouse vintage for Tempier.

14% d'alcool

The medium to full bodied palate shows good overall balance but perhaps lacks some structure and firmness that keeps the from giving a more compelling showing. The wine gives medium a medium length finish with subtle tannins. Accessible now, this wine should benefit from a couple of years of bottle age.
