  • Very well made. Big fruit still holding on. Baked strawberry, raspberry, mocha, boysenberry with hints of spice. Soft lingering finish.

  • I've said plenty previously. Year after year, bottle after bottle, this is a solid wine for a very nice price

  • The flavor of this wine is just fantastic. the sweet fruits up front follow through to the middle and finish. The middle is all about the fruit and the finish has a nice medium tannin and just a bit of oak integrates the wine nicely. Age this wine a bit and it just gets better

  • deep, powerful and nuanced. a great match for turkey dinner. It holds up to all of the side dishes and to the gravy.

  • A nice well balanced and made wine. Great value for the price. This shows how blending a bit of other reds makes the Zinfandel sing!

  • I have had nothing but good wine from Three Wine Company. Everything i've had has been spot on as representative of the wines/blends. Field blend is perhaps the best of their lot. Currant/raisin nose with spice. Black/red currant on palate. Medium length finish. Slightly chewy but velvety smooth. I should have bought LOTS more. Outstanding buy at $13+/btl!!

  • I expect nothing but good wine from Three. Everything i've had has been simply delicious. Field blend is no exception. Pop and pour. Currant nose with spice. Black/red currant on palate. Smooth, medium length finish. Slightly chewy but velvety smooth. A winner. And the price? Outstanding. Buy it by the case.

  • We have now enjoyed several bottles of this wine after ordering a case online. As always, rich and fruit forward but not overly so. Good dusty earthy side as well. Great wine at a great price. Would love to see what it does in a few years but I don't know if we can hold out that long.
3/30/17. Just finished (I think) our last bottle of the 2012. Dear god.... it just gets better and better. I think I need to start socking away cases and only start drinking at kindergarten age.

  • The Three Wine Company has held my interest for some time, but this is only my second tasting experience. I am a fan of Contra Costa wines, and Matt Cline has a link with the best sites.

This glass of Old Vine Field Blend, served slightly warmer than cellar temperature, is almost opaque in color/transparency. Initially the nose is muted but, after five minutes in the glass, notes of earthy, almost burnt baking spices emerge. Aromas of cherry compote, red raspberry, cumin and clove, as well as spent espresso grounds slowly become clearer. Palate reveals red fruit, cherry Jolly Rancher flavors (minus the sweetness), stewed plum, and zippy acidity. The finish is longer than I initially anticipated, yet heavily marked by oak and acid. The fresh oak was not apparent in the nose, the beginning or mid-palate, yet it is unmistakably dominant in the finish.

Day #2: The nose is somewhat muddled but fresh, with red, sour cherry and earthy, dark, coffee and chocolate elements. There is a much better harmony of flavor components. This is what I looked forward to! The acidity has melded into the berries and fruit, while much of the flavors have begun to sing in harmony, accompanied by a surprisingly long finish. As Carignan occupies more than half of the blend, I was anticipating a brief resonance of flavors in this red wine. Best of all, no oak is detected.

Day #3: The clarity of fruit is gone; the acidity is out of step with the palate. Alcohol, tinged with oak, gives the nose a bourbon-like presence (think Maker's Mark). The mid-palate is a gob of murky, stewed fruit and dark chocolate. The finish is hot.

I do not think that the wine is going to require early consumption, despite the notes herein. The 2012 Three Wine Company Old Vine Field Blend will live for at least another 5-7 years, if stored well. I believe that the red fruited acidity of day two can carry the wine into a better place than it is now. If served in the near-future, please enjoy it slightly below room temperature.

  • As it sits it seems to be changing rapidly. This bottle showed off the red fruits and the pepper and brambly feature of a Zin. A day in the closed bottle gave it much more character and heavy but smooth nature. On this one the tongue zings and then it sings!

  • Had to re-rate after 2 days of pumped storage. Initial jaminess is gone, and tannins have mellowed so that the wine is in balance. Really nice old vine character. Now looking forward to remaining bottles.

  • Great and just as good as the 2010. Warning, even the 2012 needs to be decanted. Three Wine always has sediment.

  • I was told at least 9 grapes in this, and more that are unidentified, but their website says Zinfandel (19%), Carignane (51%), Petite Sirah (17%), Mataro (12%), and Alicante Bouschet (1%) so I'd go with that. Big pepper, fruit, stucture, excellent QPR. Tasted at a trade show, so was moving fast, but this stood out in a room of 100+ quality wines.

  • The wine is very fruit forward with deep dark berries with light spice. The mouth is big and full. It looks like the previous bottle I had was in a "dumb" stage. The finish is fruity and smooth moderate tannin.

  • strong fruit with exceptional balance and depth. Lots of earth, leather and chewy tannin. Best QPR of any wine that I have had in years.

  • Big, fruity , spicy mouth with a touch of oak and tart tannin. Just doesn't seem together yet. It was about a month after having it shipped in so it may be unsettled from the shipping. We'll let it sit for several more months and then see how it goes. 15.2% alcohol!

  • Very good example of old vine field blend. Definitely a ripe and forward wine, for near-term drinking. Has the weight to stand up to heartier food but will not come off as big or clumsy on a warm day.

  • strong fruit, full throttled with lots of leather, fat and spice. I always have liked this wine, but this vintage is ready to drink now and highly pleasurable. Probably the best QPR of any wine I have had in the last five years.

  • Opened two bottles for a family gathering at our favorite Tuscan restaurant. Domenic (the chef) had trotted out his new spring menu. It was nice to have Matt Cline's field blend along for the occasion, this is good stuff, as usual. Quite a variety of food ordered, the Three stood up to the hearty ones, complemented the finesse dishes, and tasted really good as we drank some waiting to be served. This is supposed to age well; we won't find out.

  • Popped and poured with leftovers. Dark purple as usual (this is our first 2012). Very fruit-forward out of the bottle, but it gained complexity with air. That leads me to believe it might age well, but with summer grilling season coming, we probably won't find out. Love this stuff.
