  • Powerful aromas of tropical fruit, flowers and (I swear) a hint of petrol. Fruity, almost exotic -- think guava and cooked quince --, along with pears, apricot and an herbal quality. Concentrated, oily, but with firm acidity. For all that is going on, it was easy to drink. Quite a remarkable riesling.

  • Superb. Perfect balance. Great energy and fruit. This will go the distance but just starting to drink really well.

  • A bottle three years ago was all about structure. This bottle has reclaimed its fruit, opening up after several years of slumber, emerging from a cocoon to be more beautiful than it was before it shut down. It was clear immediately after the bottle was opened, as the first sip was brilliant: peach, stone, lemon cream and tarragon, all served up on a platter of Himalayan rock salt. Rich on the palate, but completely dry, the depth of flavor was a weighted blanket, comforting and serene.

  • Stone fruits with a slightly bitter citrusy finish and some lingering herbal qualities. Opulent and long, yet energetic and contained. I saw recent tasting notes with descriptors such as "austere" and "bone dry": not this bottle. Very good for my tastes.

  • Resolutely dry, as if the bones of Riesling were all that were bottled. An hour later it shows more fruit, but still in an austere format. Each rib, each vertebrae is clearly visible. It’s a structural masterpiece, as if one was drinking an x-ray of The Pietà.

  • Out of magnum, this was shimmering. Perfect balance of minerals, flowers, and fruit, with some herbal and minty kickers in the background. Love what Alzinger does here.

  • Special wine that’s phenomenal now and will only improve. This has everything. The nose is expressive with exotic fruit brightened by cooler-toned citrus. And the palate is an melange of ripe, concentrated Riesling fruit, some bitter citrus, intense minerality (as Steinertal always seems to have), and electric acidity. This is opulent and bold—indeed, it’s grand—but it’s only medium-weight and it’s so well put together than the overal impression is elegant and effortless. And yet, I feel like this is still holding something in reserve. Astonishing QPR and I wish I had bought a case.

  • This is special. Bright white and stone fruits, with tart citrus and layers and layers of fine minerals. Opulent and ripe but impeccably balanced. Inviting herbal notes. Textbook example of one of my favorite white wines made anywhere. Young and still somewhat tight but highly impressive.

  • Probably not the wisest idea to open this at this stage, as this does seem rather tight and unyielding at first. It certainly doesn't have the amazing aromatics of the Hollerin or Loibenberg, rather the nose is rather muted but slowly opens after a long decant to show some of the classic Steinertal minty, herbal, and stony scents. The palate feels incredibly vibrant with an almost crystalline texture, though again it gives the impression it's holding something in reserve. I'll leave my other bottles alone for some time.

  • excellent riesling - good acidity, I suppose it will keep and improve, but very enjoyable now with pork roast, apples and greens

even better 2 nights later. more complex, lovely aromatics - probably means you can keep it for a long time

Nice citrus nose with délicate floral notes. Vert Nice on the palate, with a welcome touch of acidity. Vert well balanced. Nice medium/long finish without excess sugar. Would buy again if I coulis find it.

  • Delicious wine, somewhat open, very precise and filligrees. Light on its feet but the unmistakeable palate feel of a great Wachau riesling. White peach and peach pit notes. Just lovely. And remarkable how Alzinger keeps the wine so precise and balanced given the growing heat in the Wachau. (I shared with a well know Burgundy winemaker and we has surprised at the alcohol level). Drank alongside a 12 Beaucastel Blanc VV and 06 anfd 09 Lafon Meursault Charmes, and the wine really stood out in this vaunted company.

  • Beautifully classic young Riesling nose of fragrant fruit and yellow flowers; stunningly delicious, though in Alzinger's typically restrained style, a slow wave of layered Riesling washes over the tongue, elegant, but with restrained power, buttressed by perfect acidity, a nice saline note, slowly giving way to a finish of smooth river stones. Gorgeous wine, delicious now, will be at it's best in 10-20 years.
