I’ve enjoyed several ‘02 Drouhins (the Chorey Les Beaune was a little gem of a wine that I went through cases of) but this was my first encounter with the Clos Vougeot: deep dark brooding nose with great purity of dark cherry fruit and crushed stone; no pronounced “Drouhin acidity” that I also often find on their gran crus; still needs several years to unfurl and gain complexity. 92+
2002 is not my favorite vintage on the Côte de Nuits as I find most of the wines to be four-square. OTOH, it is the kind of vintage that Drouhin handles well, and this wine provided a pleasant surprise with Clos-Vougeot raspberry fruit, a bit of spice, and some elegance in a medium-weight body. Tannins fully resolved, but still room for upside improvement. Cellared since original release.

This has a polished black tar and black cherry profile. The flavors are deep and intense and the wine has serious weight without feeling heavy. Nice smokey and stewed strawberry flavors. Great acidity and freshness. Tannins are nearly invisible but the structure remains firm. A long and delicious finish.

In a really good place. Great balance and sneaky length but without the depth and complexity I’d like to see. Great cherry fruit, savory herb notes as well. Great food wine; would get lost in a tasting. Should age gracefully for a long time.

Dark fruit profile. Pretty dark berry perfume. A bit closed but still had good length. Well structured. Depth was there but really had to be coaxed out of the glass.

Colour is slight bricking at the edge but is still youthful. Beautiful nose typical of maturing red burgundy. Palate is still slightly youthful. This could evolve positively with more time but it is also in a good place for consumption today, depending on one’s taste preferences. Shows typical Drouhin elegance.

Aged and elegant, structure still holding up. Fruit still strong and nose is excellent. However lack of complexity and short finish keep this from being something special.

Red-purple in the glass. Musky black cherries on the nose. Then some gamey tart fruit, red and black cherries and some animal. Closed down a bit in the glass with time. Drinking well now but no rush to drink.

Beautiful medium ruby. Lots of barnyard and earth upon opening. Poured after 1.5 hours. Barnyard subsided, but still slightly evident. Cherry, spice and licorice on the nose over time. Nice balanced and refined palate of cherry, sour cherry, cranberry, earth, ginger and hint of licorice over time. A dusty element at inception, but disappeared. Not a blockbuster, but very enjoyable. No tannin and should hold up for a few more years.

From magnum. A good, not great burg. Approachable like most 2002's, and while very enjoyable, lacked the impressiveness that would bring it to killer/staggering status.

Medium ruby. Massive framboise, strawberries, cinnamon, red cherry, forrest floor and some spice. Mid-full bodied but very powerful and elegant, with firm, fine-grained tanins, bright fruit and high acidity. Very long finish. A textbook in combining elegance and power. Slightly restrained, will reach its full expressiveness after 2012.

Elegant, but lacks depth and fruit feels a bit closed down and not particularly expressive. Solid wine but nothing special.

Lightish color, sweet on the palate, it is a bit dry but has elegance and should improve with further aging.
