  • Corkage at One if Land, Two if by Sea in NYC. Wonderful Thanksgiving wine. Right in drinking window. Beautiful nose of black and red fruit, mineral, mushroom and spice. Increased spice (cinnamon and cloves) and must on palate. Long finish. This wine has years to go. No bricking whatsoever, and still so lively. Decant for at least an hour. UU3

  • Wines of the Gods (House of AC and JC): Component of DRC Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux vertical. Dark ruby with rim bricking and ripe Morello cherry Madeira nose. Palate with earthy saddle leather inflicted dried red fruits and a sous bois painted with barn boards finish. Much older than any of the DRC counterparts in this tasting and should be enjoyed in the near term. Best now-2030.

  • Pale ruby, and surprisingly bright. Light, elegant, with soft silky tannins, with aromas and flavours of florals, red cherry, moss, slight barnyard, a hint of almond. The florals and fruits persist at the back, and having a fairly long finish. Surprising to still experience such freshness and exuberance when it is approaching 20 years. Great wine!

  • Drinking really well, but probably toward the second half of its drinking plateau. Opened about 3 hours before drinking. One of the two bottles opened had a bit of funk to it, but the funk disappeared after a short decant of about half an hour or so.

I disagree with the prior review which compared the wine to a 25 year old model whose second hobby was 19th C Russian literature and whose first hobby was sexual adventures around the world. To me, the wine is a bit like a lover of many years to whom one returns periodically when the mood is right.

  • Net op tijd gedronken op de vooravond van mijn verjaardag. Vertoonde nogal wat droesem en slierten in het laatste glas. Rijp weeïg bouquet, mooi rood fruit, droogbloemen, grenen hout, beetje hars. In de mond, mooie structuur met prima zacht rood fruit, bramen en kersen, maar later ook bessen;
zachte tannines en zuren. Mooi evenwicht. Rokerig, prachtige karamel tonen. Afdronk met beetje kruidige tonen, kaneel en witte peper

  • Drinking nicely at the moment and only needed a short decant. Beautiful nose, very subtle fruit in the background, combined with a leafy herbaceous note that was quite nice. Supple and smooth texture, good richness in the mid palate. Complex but not overly so, just really delicious in an elegant and clean pinot fruit kind of way. Drink now but will likely hold for a while longer.

  • Really expected more from this bottle, as I've liked this producer's wines in the past. There was just too much disjointedness and funky (not in a good way) notes, though the bottle was clearly not flawed. The fruit is too much in the background to predictably say that this bottle will age well, despite the good structure.

  • Kleur: Fluwelig, opvallend donkerrood.

    Google Translate:

Color: Velvety, striking dark red. Aroma / bouquet: After uncorking and also two hours later the bouquet remains remarkably closed. Impressions of licorice, strawberry jam and a hint of Madeira Taste / Finish:. Cool Burgundy, more pronounced on the palate than on the nose, after 16 years still strong, tough and mouth filling. Unfortunately the wine in the final has an unpleasant hardness ... General / potential: Too bad, this wine is 'over the top' at this stage. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Finish: 15 + General / potential: 8 = 89/100

  • Dark ruby with lightening around the rim. Reticent aromas take some time to show reddish black cherries, sandalwood and dried flowers. Medium bodied palate shows spicy and earthy crushed tart-sweet red pit fruits, medium acidity, fine grained tannins and a smoky woodsy finish. The use of oak is evident...

  • Was on the way out.

  • Needs a few hours to breathe to fully unwind and release its glory. Rich, unctuous, powerful. Has 3-5 years left.

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Alpharetta, GA): Brick core with pale rim, see through; funky, aged, radishes, licorice, charred, possibly cooked; some sweetness on the palate, nice mid, palate better than the nose; nobody really enjoyed though I could see redeeming qualities in the palate.

  • Sublime. Deep ruby color with no sediment, this wine is fully mature and open for business. Exquisite laser-focused nose of super clean pinot fruit, black cherry and spice, with beautiful perfume.
Tasting encompasses the entire spectrum with long long finish.
If a date, this was a 25 year old model beauty who studies 19th century Russian literature as a 2nd hobby, her 1st being sexual adventures from around the world. Highly recommended++ if you have some.

  • HDH Auction - Something just wasn't right with this bottle.

  • HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Just a bit too much animale and funk for me. Sappy and rich but I just couldn't do this one.

  • HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): A deeper, richer pinot with some oak. The palate was smooth and the tannins really seemed to come through for me. Some earthy notes on the finish - my recommendation would be to hold and/or decant for quite a while.

  • After a few hours in the decanter, there was classic hoisin and spice on the nose with spicy dark Vosne fruit on the palate. Concentrated, fruit forward, primary, and dense. Weighty. Not sure if this is my style or maybe just needs 5-10 years of cellar time to drop some weight and add some finesse. I'd certainly hold if I had this in my cellar. An elephant in a ballerina suit.

  • The one adjective my dining companion used was "ethereal". My first thought was "fruit purity". The intoxicating nose seamlessly transitions to the bright red fruits that envelope the palate in silk. The flavors were authentic in a way I rarely find in Cali pinots. This was not cherry pie, or cherry cola. This was grazing perfectly ripe cherries at the farmer's market. The analogue in the culinary world would be a chef who starts with the freshest ingredients and then gets out of the way. The wine must have given us subconscious cues as we skipped the cheese course and opted for a plate of simply sauteed chanterelles that were a heavenly pairing. Burg aficionados may quible that this Echezeax is simplistic and lacks some of the depth and complexity of the finest Grand Crus. Perhaps. But, the components of the wine were so in balance with nothing out of place. In my opinion, this wine is "simple" in the same way that great risotto is "simply" cheese and rice. Consumed at Marche Moderne in Costa Mesa. Bottle purchased on release from Premier Cru.

  • The wine exhibits a slightly opaque black core, with crimson colored rims. Very rich and opulent on the nose showing dark cherries, blackberries, licorice, violets, earthiness, roasted meats, vanilla, and oriental spices. On the palate the wine shows a creamy texture, with flavors of cool dark berries, dark chocolate, espresso, spices, and creamy vanilla. An awkward styled Burgundy for me, it seems too big with a lot of oak, the alcohol sticks out and very little of the terroir shows through.

  • Wonderfull Ruby red in it's colour with a sent of cherries, dried fruits like Prune, caramel and sweet chocolate. The mouth is smooth with silky tannines and soft acids. The wine is very elegant with a medium body, a soft spiciness and hints of Tobaco, Tea and Hazelnut. The finish is long and full of black olives.
    I love it!

  • More burgundian, old world, aromatically more subtle but intricate. Still had some tannin, thought it would be softer. Complex nose, earthy. Beautifully layered, complete palate filler, muted fruit.

  • Clear, medium ruby. Initially leather and game on the nose, over time resolving to cherry and raspberry with some heat to it. Lots of earth with a lot of acidity, spice and smoke. Not a lot of fruit. Very well made but I am wondering if the glories of Burgundy are lost on me.

  • Big, muscular, and modern. Spicy and dark fruit. Not in a great place right now and can certainly use some more time.

  • A solid brick wall. Way, way, way tooooo young. decanted for about an hour prior to tasting.Somehow I am confident this will be a great wine in 10 years or more, but I will never know as this was my only bottle. Score witheld.Wish I had opened it at home and tried it over several evenings.

Tasted December 19, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of florals, underlying smokiness, meatiness and black fruits. Flavors of Bing cherries, black berries, a hint of raspberries and some plums. Medium to bright acidity, firm tannins, full body. Hold.

  • Tasted blind. Slightly closed nose of X-mas spices and light red / black fruit and dried fruits. Limited fruit on the nose. On the palate, light smoke and soy sauce. Again, this lacks fruit. Shut down with air.

  • Medium-garnet colour. Aromas of spice, leather, currant, and red licorice. Quite closed on the palate, not showing any real fruit. Short finish. Not Rated.

  • On the nose, black currants, black cherries and just a bit of oak spiciness and vanilla. On the palate, full bodied with the same fruits as the nose, and a little bit more noticeable vanilla. Velevety and well balanced with lively acidity and a long, sweet finish. Beautiful wine.
