A bitter sweet note as this is my last bottle of non ZH VT or SGN or basically, what would be construed as a dry table wine. And dry it was. Age as really chisled this Riesling into a pretty refined, highly terroir driven, and flat out enjoyable drink. While it still maintained the Domaine’s calling card of richness and power, I loved the almost peaty quality exhibited - very fresh - long on the finish. Heck, I’d further venture this has at least another 5 years of quality drinking ahead.

This is a great Zind-Humbrecht- it’s got all the characteristic extract and explosiveness in an off-dry package that’s perfectly balanced by the acidity. The palate has dried apricot, preserved orange peel, saffron, honey, and a bit of nutty oxidation. What a stunner...sometimes ZH can be a bit over the top but this is one where the style really works.

Bright, golden orange, a slightly alarming colour were it not so damn beautiful! Really very pretty, I'm not sure I've ever had a wine this colour - mature, sl botrytis nose - just opened, so it may open up - on the palate, silky smooth and velvety, with no noticeable acidity until the aftertaste, where it supports but doesn't assert - the flavours are mature, complex - dried orange peel, lemongrass, not lanolin, but something akin to that - nose has opened now, showing more orange liqueur, almost like Grand Marnier w a brandy edge - this is quite a cerebral sipper at this point, but very smooth and enjoyable -

Showing a little more oxidation than I would expect immediately after opening but the oxidative characteristics move to a supporting role after the aromas and flavors start to unwind with air. This seems much drier than the last bottle I opened but still has a fairly viscous texture...the high acidity and slight tinge of bitterness on the finish really counteract the high residual sugar and create a sense of balance (well, balance in the context of ZH.) This is a big, powerful wine and will show well with the right food...we paired it with Indian but Sichuan, a cheese course, or foie gras would also work. There is a place for these big rieslings even if the drier styles that are in vogue are more versatile, and no one else does it like this. Excellent.

Wow. Golden color with a bit of orange. Honeysuckle, candied orange rind and apricot dominate the full but not late-harvest nose. The palate is rich and ripe for sure but this is a dry wine in feel. So much extract; so much depth; so much complexity. Would be perfect with cheese though was fine with grilled pork. Amazing vino. (95)

Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Alpharetta, GA): Deep golden; bright nose, custard, lemon, pineapple, petrol, mineral, peach, balm; great fat and texture to it, some residual but a great place in its evolution, rich fruit and mouthfeel; delicious now but should hold for many years; delicious, should have been WOTN if it weren't for wine racists.
Popped and poured. Paired with a few authentic entrees from the best Chinese restaurant in the greater Seattle area, the Szechuan Chef! Impressive wine to say the least. Gorgeous orange/light bronze color led the way to an intoxicating nose of ripe peach and apricot accented by mineral undertones. Palate is littered with any and all orchard fruits framed by a generous helping of acidity. Rich and lush without ever overdoing it as the acid whips the fruit in line. Very enjoyable bottle. 93pts.

While I don't have quite the same enthusiasm for ZH as I did in years past (plus the prices are just too high for me) this ZN Brand was simply superb. Fireworks on the nose (never an issue at this estate) but it seems bottle age has really developed the mineral side, equating to an experience that was almost as good on the nose as it was on the palace. very healthy color, deeper than the norm for ZH, very chisled, stone, exotic peach and more than adequate acidity beautifully synchronize. Some sweetness but a million miles from ponderous, and a sublime pairing with a mess of high end Szechuan dishes. It will be really tough to keep my hands of the last bottle, but I think it shoould have years ahead, in the zone today.

Frog, ZH, Bouchard, Krug, Sauzet, Fargues (E. 4th street): This bottle was singing. Deep golden in color. It had been opened about an hour before consuming and was right there. The nose has a very, very slight diesel note. Lots of minerality. Some saline/sea air. Also some slight lime peel. On the palate, this is unctuous, and slightly sweet. Well within reason to work with food. Great acidity. It was tremendous with my Vindaloo Cauliflower. Balanced. Long finish. Seemed to improve all night long. No hurry, but not sure it will get better from here. A long life ahead though.

Halfway through a case of 12 375's, I wish of course that I had waited on the ones already consumed. Slightly reticent nose, quite extended length, a decent amount of sugar for a non VT wine, and much acid in the mouth; well balanced. Ripe white fruit, large doses of petrol, some dark dried earth. Sweet!

Tasted from a half bottle. Nice fairly dark yellow/pale gold. Riesling aromas like peach, yellow plums, pineapple as well as honey and petrol. In the mouth, the attack has a fair amount of vivacity (acidity) but is also sweet, with a moderate length. Unfortunately, I am mostly accustomed to either dry Riesling (like Trimbach's Cuvée Frédéric Emile) or sweet BA or TBA German Rieslings. The intermediate amount of sweetness (rated 4 by Zind-Humbrecht) is offputting for me. Will try again this evening to see if it has opened more. Didn't have the length of the Pinot Gris Rotenberg or Herrenweg Gewurztraminer.

A beautiful wine from the master of Alsace. I can see this wine continuing to grow and evolve for an eternity though. Right now, it's starting to show some nice signs of development; but is still showing off a tonne of classic, intense, in-yer-face Riesling-y-ness. Huge acid balances out the sweetness.

As with my last bottle opened 2.5 years ago, Indice 4.The cork said vendanges tardive, although this was in fact clearly the regular bottling (as the label suggested). Diesel and honey. Rich, peppery and intense with a lot of orange zest and apricot atop salty minerality. A bit much with food, somewhat better on its own. There is good purity and minerality but so much richness. I have had 2 of 3 and really want to wait about 10 years on the last one.

I'm sorry to say I opened this too early, but was nonetheless impeccably balanced and full of rich ripe apricot and peach aromas that were mirrored on the palate along with notes of honey and baked quince. Brought to wine group dinner at Ortanique on Tuesday. Superb bottle -- what I would hope for from a ZH grand cru. Very balanced. Nose was slightly honeyed and petrol-like. Still has the acidity and stuffing to develop more complexity. A really great bottle of wine - paired nicely with Cindy Hudson's conch fritter appetizer
Interestly, the cork was stamped Vendage Tardive, as a previous CT taster had noted. That sparked a debate as to whether it was or not There was definitely some sweetness in the wine, but the consensus was this was not sweet enough to be a VT.
Since we use a double blind format, I transferred the ZH into a Pride Mountain viognier bottle for the dinner. An Alsace bottle would have given it away. Still, a few of the guys got it right -- Alsatian riesling. The other guesses were German spatlese oe Loire chenin blanc.

A blockbuster Riesling. Whopping 14+ alcohol, but not overly hot. Indeed, superb balance for this young heavy-weight. Luscious honey color. Gorgeous tropical fruit nose. Pineapple, peach and honey on the palate. Only short-coming, noted below, is the fact it is a bit young at this stage. Agree with Eric that this one can use some more time lying down in the cellar. Will look forward to the other two bottles in the coming years. Alsace vinification at its best.

Indice 4.The cork said vendanges tardive, although this was in fact clearly the regular bottling (as the label suggested). A gorgeous young baby. Basically embryonic, aging glacially. Faintly diesel driven hints of Riesling are followed by lavish notes of peach and honey, a gorgeous underlay of mineral that is drowning in gloriously ripe fruit at this point, more bruiser than subtle at this stage. Despite the ripeness, the acidity is there and keeps this interesting. I was amazed at how well this matched up with a wide variety of food. Surprisingly good with some crudo (albacore and escolar) in citrus. If you have them I recommend letting them sleep. Still deeply primary.

Zind Humbrecht Rieslings (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): Indice 4. Darker toned than any other wine in this group. Petrol, classic pear fruit, some cinnamon spice and a trace of honey. As promising as the aromatics were, this was really disappointing when finally tasted. Frankly sweet apporaching VT level, fairly simple, and heavy due to low acidity. I much preferred some of the other wines for their length, finish, and minerality. An in between wine, this is neither fresh enough to enjoy with food nor rich and unctuous enough to serve as an apertif or dessert wine. Ponderous.

Showing slightly aged, this Brand no longer seems "racy" but rather "full bodied". There's still plenty of grapefruit and ginger and candied orange peel, but the nose seems more explosive right out of the bottle, and the length seems rich and lively and very present. The sugar that's supposedly in this wine seems buried under all of the extract and the structure. Very, very nice.

Although this wine is still a baby, the nose displayed a strong petrol element that I’m finding to be common with this vineyard, young or old. As the wine warmed, the petrol scents waned to more traditional fruits such as freshly sliced summer peaches and nectarines. If the Rangen trademark is a volcanic “peat” flavor, I’d say the Brand (at least a young one) is all about pure unadulterated engine power, like AC / DC played a concert in your glass! Pure pineapple flavors are found in droves, as is a pleasing touch of flint. Long finish which came as no surprise. The indice said “4”, but at this point I’d say more in the 2-3 range, and will continue to gain complexity and refinement with additional bottle age. BTW - PC gave this away for $34.99 two summers ago, pricing which I doubt to ever see again.

2002 Zind Humbrecht wines; 1/1/2006-12/31/2006: Not for the feint of heart, this sweet Riesling opens right out of the bottle and shows intense, blousy tastes of ginger and grapefruit, with some pleasing, slightly bitter grapefruit rind thrown in. It has a good length that the sugar seems to accentuate; it also has good acidity that seems to support the sugar and provide some focus for the otherwise unfocused notes.

Quite sweet nose, dominated by honey and tropical fruit. The palate was also quite heavily sweet and a little flabby, as the wine seems to have less acidic backdone than I remember it having.

Ponderous.

NSMFOW-Wines to Celebrate a 48th Anniversary (The Grapevine, Salem, MA): Color light straw. Nose of peaches, apricots, honeysuckle. Wonderful palate of peaches, apricots, honey with a pleasant hint of petrol. Full bodied, slightly oily mouthfeel. Nice acidity. Long finish. This wine was simply marvelous and served at a perfect temperature. What a great way to start off the night!

Very, very nice.

popped and poured,,,, maybe it needed mroe time. Petrol on the nose. Nice very mature fruit core, not big, but really needed some more acid to balance. Paired very nicely with the Thai salad. 90 due to the QPR

Nice combination of petrol and fruit with some sugar but still relatively off-dry. Powerful, long, beautiful.

(at Corks – Baltimore) This was my wine of the night. The reds were universally delicious, but this was just singing. A bit richer than other Brand Rieslings from ZH that I have tasted, yet no less complex. Drink now and for the next 10 years. (19.5)
