A few extra years in bottle were worth the wait as this wine developed some nice earthy, mushroomy notes to go along with silky strawberry and cherry flavors. A bit of cedar cigar box in the background as well. Medium+ acidity, mostly resolved tannin. Silky smooth mouthfeel and finish. No food needed. Just delicious on its own to sip and enjoy.

Tasted over 2 hrs and day 3 -nearly semi-translucent med dark red minimal clearing -expressive red fruit rhubarb beetroot; more expressive on day 3 with brown spice -med+ refreshing acidity gives a beautiful zing, med/med- weight red fruit sweet smoky earth with that rhubarb/beetroot new world pinot element and some spice, med/med- tannins and a caramel oak note on the moderately long finish; more open and warm with some spicy oak -lively and structured like a Burg with a savory earthy spice that bears some resemblance to a Gevrey-Chambertin yet with a cool climate California pinot profile, very nice probably on its mature plateau now

Medium slightly lighter body, nose isn’t showing me much at all, this is all about brighter strawberry and light raspberry, little on the riper side, with a bit of sweetness, strong but balanced acidity, enjoyable but not particularly complex. Not sure I see this developing into anything more interesting, though it should be fine for quite a few years.

Very good. Bright fruit, medium light body, balanced, good food wine. Strawberry and cranberry nose, hint of menthol. Light, soft and Silky in the mouth. Strawberry jam, sour cherry on the palate. Good acid. Long balanced finish. Probably at its peak but seems it could stay there for another year or two, at least. One of the better Copains I have had.

My final Monument Tree in my cellar, from 375 for what it's worth, too. Opened about 90 mins ago, and had a glass at room temp (about 67f). That pour tasted of candied red apple, the kind you would eat from a stick. Enjoyed that note, then decided to chill the wine down a little bit. As the wine comes from the cooler temp back towards the room temp, it now fills in with cherry, raspberry and that same red apple impression, plus a note of herb that was present at both temps. My last bottle of this was in mid-2018 and I found the wine a bit savory and more older world, but this bottle drinks more in between old and new world, and overall is in a real nice place. Expressive, with a deep core of red apple, herb, acidity with a texture that is beginning now to smooth out.

1st of 2 bottles. A beautiful PN from Anderson Valley. Leans more to the savory side, with darker fruit that is overshadowed by spices, sautéed mushrooms, meat broth, and mild vanilla. Pretty tannins with perfectly balanced acidity. Drink now through 2022+.

Popped and poured. Light ruby color. Burgundian on the nose with delicate red berry fruit and hints of earthy aromas but more straight up fruit driven on the palate. Great balance and delicious to drink but was hoping for a bit more complexity given the price. Will let my remaining bottle age for another few years.

Following up on the bottle from last week, I opened a 375 tonight, to just get a good size glass with my home dinner. Consistent with the other bottles, this has the same smoky, 5-spice aromatic. The fruit is plump, with a dominant core of cherry, some red apple and good acidity. I continue to enjoy this vintage of Tree and like the expression.

Like all the other past bottles, this always presents me with a smoky aromatic, which was true of the previous bottle we had 5 weeks ago. Juicy, darker fruit, good depth and a tangy finish. Aging well.

Blind: guessed california pinot. Has great clarity and light garnet coloring. Light ripe raspberry and what seems to be some oak. The mid palate is tart cherry resulting in an excellent wine.

Wow, wow, wow. This is evolving beautifully. Like with the bottle a year or so ago, it begins with a pinot funk kind of aromatic, which when mixed with air and time smooths out to add some rose petal. The core of the wine remains a icon for balance, equally showing a bright acidity mixed against red fruit of strawberry and apple, with a little bit of blueberry, too. Medium weighted and with all of the parts working so well together, this is a treat and privilege to drink pinot noir made and reflective as this bottle was last night. Stunning wine, with no fade after 5 years.

More black fruited than red, on the riper side, cherry bitters, herby stemmy notes and savoriness that Keep the impression of sweetness mostly in check (it calls to mind N. Rhone more than burgundy), medium bodied, plenty of layering, but definitely a bit more assertive than elegant. Tannins are lightly grippy and approachable and acid is adequate. Good for drinking now.

From soil of decomposed sandstone and loam and with a variety of clones. Earthy and rich nose with red and dark fruit and some herbal notes. There is a nice sandy tannic structure on the palate where some smoke notes and oak influence also appear. A good Pinot Noir that will need some time before it peaks.

Winter in Wineland; 1/14/2017-1/20/2017 (Sonoma & Napa): Unfortunate that this is the last year of this wine as it's really quite nice. It's a very bright wine. More herbal based than fruit. I almost get meat-like characteristics on the nose, but those translate to more of a savory flavor on the palette which meshes well with the herbaceous side of the wine. One of my favorites of the tasting.

Once again, shows that smoky note in the aromatic, along with a gamy, smoky palate note and plenty of focused, bright ripe cheery fruit. I really enjoyed the bottle and it was finished to the bottom so nothing to re-taste today. It did show this time a nice straddling between Burg and CA PN. Dug it.

13% abv. Light burgundy red, with moderate intensity aromas. On the palate, red raspberry, spice and a hint of rose petals. A delicate, yet energetic Pinot, lingering aftertaste.

Gang of 5 Lady's Night: Very smokey nose, like something you'd find a big Syrah. I was a bit of a distraction and the palate showed lots of highly toasted oak. Nice cherry and berry flavors but smokey at the end.
The last bottle, which I really enjoyed, didn't look like this at all but it had been open a number of days. I guess the advice here is decant the night before unless you like the smokey BBQ effect.
Lots of smoky top notes in this bottle, which I did also find in my last one a few months ago. Couple of the guys with me called it oak toast, and this is likely true, although I know the Copain approach is usually not more than around 20% new wood. As to the fruit profile and acidity, both again were lovely. This wine for me really shines in those two areas and it makes for a great drink again.

A little gremlin left me a glass worth in a bottle and slipped it into my bag. It's been open for a number of days and sat in my refrigerator for two days. Stuff is indestructible.
Perfect cranberry color. Nose is driven by red fruit and a whiff of molasses. I get that "molasses" aroma from many copain wines and have used it to pick them out blind. I also call it oak influenced and I don't think there's any new oak so it's probably the whole cluster working its magic. The attack is a tart raspberry and copious stem note but that fades quickly and cranberry takes it the rest of the way home. An ever so slight white pepper bite on the finish with garigue. Nimble, medium level acid and delicate mouthfeel. This is damn nice Pinot and I haven't been a big fan of a few older monument tree vintages. This is one of those wines where you say "I'm putting a few of these down for the long haul." But you drink them all in a few years and then wish you had purchased more. There's always next vintage! Enjoy.

Opened this about an hour ago. Tastes like Monument Tree at its best. I say this because good Tree, when it is on, shows a mix for me of pure watermelon, strawberry and red apple tones. It is this template of Tree, but where it goes further than say the 2012, is that this 2013 has the tangy acidity that really makes this top class. That acidity here, combined with aromatics of graphite and smoke, alongside all these cool red fruit markers, makes for a great glass of pinot. Plenty left for several more glasses over a few days so more to come....a day later, drinking this with a clean palate, I can really judge this well. I tell you what, this is just fantastic. It rings true to many of the past Tree vintages, with the pure red, jammy strawberry, red apple, watermelon and that characteristic smoky quality that is all a dead ringer for Tree. And then the finish, the razzy acidity and a gamy note which really amps up the quality here. For all the love and adoration I have for Kiser, Wendling and Bearwallow, this '13 Tree makes me remember how good this can compete with those wines. Outrstanding showing.
